How to Spread Bet on Land Securities

How to Spread Bet on Land Securities?

If you are going to invest in companies like Land Securities then one possibility is to spread trade on the Land Securities share price.

Looking at a spread betting platform like Inter Trader, we can see they are pricing the Land Securities Rolling Daily market at 813.5p - 815.0p. As a result, an investor could spread bet on the Land Securities share price:

Land Securities Trading Example Rising above 815.0p, or
Land Securities Spread Betting Example Falling below 813.5p

Whilst making a spread bet on UK equities you trade in £x per penny. So, if you decide to invest £2 per penny and the Land Securities share price moves 27p then there would be a difference to your profit/loss of £54. £2 per penny x 27p = £54.

Rolling Daily Equities Markets

An important aspect of this Rolling Daily Market is that in contrast with futures markets, there is no settlement date. If your trade is still open at the end of the trading day, it will just roll over into the next trading session.

Should your position roll over, if you are speculating that the market will:

Land Securities Spread Betting Example Increase - then you'll normally be charged a small financing fee, or
Land Securities Spread Betting Example Decrease - then you will normally receive a small credit to your account

For a worked example please see Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

Land Securities Rolling Daily - Equities Spread Betting Example

Now, if you continue with the spread of 813.5p - 815.0p and make the assumptions that:
  • You've completed your analysis, and
  • Your research suggests that the Land Securities shares will rise higher than 815.0p
Then you might decide that you are going to buy at 815.0p for a stake of, let’s say, £10 per penny.

So, you win £10 for every penny that the Land Securities shares push above 815.0p. Nevertheless, you will make a loss of £10 for every penny that the Land Securities market falls below 815.0p.

Put another way, if you buy a spread bet then your P&L is calculated by taking the difference between the closing price of the market and the initial price you bought the market at. You then multiply that difference in price by your stake.

If after a few days the stock rose then you might want to close your position and therefore lock in your profits. As an example, if the market increased then the spread, determined by the spread betting firm, could change to 829.3p - 830.8p. You would close your spread bet by selling at 829.3p. So, with the same £10 stake you would make:

Profit / loss = (Closing Value - Opening Value) x stake
Profit / loss = (829.3p - 815.0p) x £10 per penny stake
Profit / loss = 14.3p x £10 per penny stake
Profit / loss = £143.00 profit

Financial spread betting is not always easy. With this example, you wanted the share price to increase. Of course, the share price might fall.

If the Land Securities share price began to drop then you might choose to close your position to stop any further losses.

If the market dropped to 799.3p - 800.8p then this means you would close your position by selling at 799.3p. Accordingly, your loss would be:

Profit / loss = (Closing Value - Opening Value) x stake
Profit / loss = (799.3p - 815.0p) x £10 per penny stake
Profit / loss = -15.7p x £10 per penny stake
Profit / loss = -£157.00 loss

Note: Land Securities Rolling Daily spread betting price taken as of 19-Oct-12.
