How to Spread Bet on US Crude?
As with many financial markets, you can financial spread trade on the future value of commodities, like US Crude, increasing or decreasing.
Note that different spread betting companies refer to US Crude in different ways, including Nymex, West Texas, West Texas Intermediate and Nymex West Texas.
Currently the US Crude (November) market is $97.11 - $97.17 with FinancialSpreads.com. This market expires on 16-Nov-07.
Therefore you can financial spread bet on the Nymex market settling:
- Above $97.17 on 16-Nov-07, or
- Below $97.11 by 16-Nov-07
Note that for the Nymex US Crude market, you trade in £x per tick, where a tick is $0.01 of US Crude movement. Eg if you were trading £2 per tick and the US Crude market moved $0.16 (16 ticks) then that would be a £32 difference to your profit/loss.
US Crude Spread Betting Example
So let's say, taking the above spread of $97.11 - $97.17, that you think the US Crude market will finish above $97.17 by 16-Nov-07.
Therefore you buy at $97.17 for a stake of £1 per tick.
If by the expiry date the market settles at $98.99, then:
Your P&L is calculated by taking the difference between the settlement level of $98.99 and the buy price of $97.17 and then multiplying that by the stake per tick.
Profits = (($98.99 - $97.17) / $0.01) x £1 per tick stake.
= ($1.82 / $0.01) x £1 per tick stake.
(ie the estimated price of Nymex has increased by $1.82)
= £182 profit.
But if the market didn't move as you expected and had US Crude closed lower at $95.11, then you would have lost on this spread trade.
Loss = (($95.11 - $97.17) / $0.01) x £1 per tick stake.
= (-$2.06 / $0.01) x £1 per tick stake.
(ie the estimated price of Nymex has decreased by $2.06)
= -£206 loss.
Where can I Find Free Live Prices on Crude Oil?
If you want to access quick live market information then you could do worse than opening an account with a firm like Financial Spreads.
Also, you don't have to trade with them, if you just open an account (which is free to do) then their data is free. The catch? You'll get the odd email or letter from them. In the example below you can also see that their free charts are also useful.
There are also live prices available at:
Where can I Find Free Crude Oil Charts?
As mentioned above, you can get free charts with spread betting companies like Financial Spreads.
You can alter the charts to see market data by the minute, by the hour, by the week etc, plus many other settings to help you analyse the charts.
As you can see the charts show how the market's are not perfect and how you can expect the prices to "gap".
FinancialSpreads.com also have another pretty handy tool in their free Demo account (mentioned above). You can open a Demo account and place demo trades whilst you practice with no risk or cost attached.
