How to Spread Bet on Ocado? |
If you want to speculate on companies like Ocado then one solution could be spread trading on the Ocado share price.
Looking at a spread betting website like Financial Spreads, we can see that they have put the Ocado Rolling Daily market at 64.8p - 65.4p. As a result, you can spread bet on the Ocado share price:
Increasing above 65.4p, or
Decreasing below 64.8p
Whilst financial spread trading on FTSE 350 equities you trade in £x per penny. Therefore, if you choose to have a stake of £4 per penny and the Ocado shares move 24p then that would be a difference to your profit/loss of £96. £4 per penny x 24p = £96.
Rolling Daily Equities Markets
This is a Rolling Daily Market which means that it does not have a set settlement date. Should your trade be left open at the end of the trading day, it just rolls over into the next session.
If your position does roll over and you are speculating on the market to:
Go higher - then you will be charged a small overnight financing fee, or
Go lower - then you will normally receive a small credit to your account
For a fully worked example see Rolling Daily Spread Betting.
Ocado Rolling Daily - Shares Spread Betting Example |
Now, if you think about the spread of 64.8p - 65.4p and make the assumptions that:
- You've completed your market research, and
- You think the Ocado share price is likely to go above 65.4p
Then you may decide that you want to buy at 65.4p for a stake of £25 per penny.
With such a spread bet you win £25 for every penny that the Ocado shares push higher than 65.4p. Conversely, however, you will lose £25 for every penny that the Ocado market falls below 65.4p.
Thinking of this in a slightly different way, should you buy a spread bet then your P&L is calculated by taking the difference between the settlement price of the market and the initial price you bought the market at. You then multiply that price difference by your stake.
Therefore, if after a few trading sessions the shares rose then you might want to close your position in order to lock in your profit.
As an example, should the market rise, the spread, set by the spreads firm, might be adjusted to 70.0p - 70.6p. You would settle/close your trade by selling at 70.0p. Accordingly, with the same £25 stake your profit would come to:
Your profit / loss = (Settlement Value - Opening Value) x stake
Your profit / loss = (70.0p - 65.4p) x £25 per penny stake
Your profit / loss = 4.6p x £25 per penny stake
Your profit / loss = £115.00 profit
Trading shares doesn't always work out as you would have liked. In the above example, you had bet that the share price would increase. Nevertheless, the share price can also decrease.
If the Ocado share price decreased, contrary to your expectations, then you could choose to close your trade in order to restrict your losses.
So if the spread dropped to 61.5p - 62.1p then this means you would settle your trade by selling at 61.5p. If so, this would result in a loss of:
Your profit / loss = (Settlement Value - Opening Value) x stake
Your profit / loss = (61.5p - 65.4p) x £25 per penny stake
Your profit / loss = -3.9p x £25 per penny stake
Your profit / loss = -£97.50 loss
Note - Ocado Rolling Daily spread betting market taken as of 31-Oct-12.
