How to Spread Bet on Rentokil?
If you are going to speculate on UK companies like Rentokil then one possibility is to spread trade on the Rentokil share price.
Looking at a financial spread betting website like FinancialSpreads.com, you can see that they are currently valuing the Rentokil Rolling Daily market at 88.1p - 88.6p. As a result, you can put a spread bet on the Rentokil share price:
Going higher than 88.6p, or
Going lower than 88.1p
When spread trading on FTSE 350 equities you trade in £x per penny. So, should you decide to risk £4 per penny and the Rentokil shares move 26p then that would alter your profits (or losses) by £104. £4 per penny x 26p = £104.
Rolling Daily Equities Markets
Be aware that this is a Rolling Daily Market which means that it does not have a closing date. If you decide to leave your trade open at the end of the day, it simply keeps rolling over into the next trading session.
If your trade is rolled over and you are speculating that the market will:
Rise - then you'll normally be charged a small financing fee, or
Fall - then a small payment will usually be credited to your account
For a more detailed example see Rolling Daily Spread Betting.
Rentokil Rolling Daily - Equities Spread Betting Example
Now, if you consider the above spread of 88.1p - 88.6p and assume:
Then you could go long of the market at 88.6p and invest, letís say, £25 per penny.
- You've done your analysis, and
- You think that the Rentokil shares are likely to go higher than 88.6p
With such a bet you win £25 for every penny that the Rentokil shares push above 88.6p. Having said that, such a bet also means that you will lose £25 for every penny that the Rentokil market decreases below 88.6p.
Put another way, if you buy a spread bet then your P&L is calculated by taking the difference between the final price of the market and the price you bought the market at. You then multiply that price difference by the stake.
Therefore, if after a few days the share price moved higher then you might want to close your position so that you can guarantee your profit.
So if the market moved up then the spread, determined by the spread betting company, could be adjusted to 93.5p - 94.0p. In order to close your spread bet you would sell at 93.5p. Therefore, with the same £25 stake you would make a profit of:
Profit = (Closing Level - Opening Level) x stake
Profit = (93.5p - 88.6p) x £25 per penny stake
Profit = 4.9p x £25 per penny stake
Profit = £122.50 profit
Speculating on shares, whether by spread trading or otherwise, is not always straightforward. In this example, you had bet that the share price would rise. Naturally, the share price can also go down.
If the Rentokil stock had fallen then you might decide to close/settle your spread bet to stop any further losses.
Should the market fall back to 84.3p - 84.8p then this means you would close your position by selling at 84.3p. Accordingly, your loss would be:
Loss = (Closing Level - Opening Level) x stake
Loss = (84.3p - 88.6p) x £25 per penny stake
Loss = -4.3p x £25 per penny stake
Loss = -£107.50 loss
