How to Spread Bet on McDonalds

How to Spread Bet on McDonalds?

If an investor decides to invest in firms like McDonalds then one possibility could be spread betting on the McDonalds share price.

Looking at a spread trading site like Inter Trader, we can see that they are pricing the McDonalds Rolling Daily market at $94.80 - $94.91. Therefore, an investor could put a spread bet on the McDonalds shares:

  McDonalds Trading Example Increasing higher than $94.91, or
  McDonalds Spread Betting Example Decreasing lower than $94.80

Whilst financial spread betting on US shares you trade in £x per cent. So, if you decided to risk £4 per cent and the McDonalds share price changes by $0.28 then that would alter your profits (or losses) by £112. £4 per cent x $0.28 = £112.

Note that you are also able to spread bet on this market in Dollars or Euros, e.g. $x per cent.

Rolling Daily Equities Markets

You should note that this is a Rolling Daily Market which means that there is no closing date for this market. If you decide to leave your trade open at the end of the day, it just rolls over into the next session.

If a bet is rolled over and you are spread betting on the market to:

  McDonalds Spread Betting Example Go up - then you'll be charged a small overnight financing fee, or
  McDonalds Spread Betting Example Go down - then you will normally receive a small credit to your account

For a worked example please see Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

McDonalds Rolling Daily - US Equities Spread Betting Example

If you think about the above spread of $94.80 - $94.91 and make the assumptions:
  • You have analysed the markets, and
  • Your analysis leads you to think that the McDonalds shares will move higher than $94.91
Then you may buy a spread bet at $94.91 for a stake of, let’s say, £2 per cent.

With such a spread bet you win £2 for every cent that the McDonalds shares rise above $94.91. Nevertheless, you will make a loss of £2 for every cent that the McDonalds market moves below $94.91.

Considering this from another angle, if you ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your P&L is found by taking the difference between the settlement price of the market and the initial price you bought the market at. You then multiply that price difference by the stake.

If after a few days the stock moved higher then you might want to close your spread bet and therefore guarantee your profits. If that happened then the spread, set by the spread trading company, might change to $95.72 - $95.83. You would settle/close your trade by selling at $95.72. Therefore, with the same £2 stake:

Profit = (Closing Level - Initial Level) x stake
Profit = ($95.72 - $94.91) x £2 per cent stake
Profit = $0.81 x £2 per cent stake
Profit = 81¢ x £2 per cent stake
Profit = £162 profit

Trading shares, whether by spread betting or not, is not always straightforward. In this case, you wanted the share price to increase. Of course, it can also decrease.

If the McDonalds shares had started to fall then you could choose to close your spread bet in order to restrict your losses.

So if the spread pulled back to $94.01 - $94.12 you would close your spread bet by selling at $94.01. That would mean you would lose:

Loss = (Closing Level - Initial Level) x stake
Loss = ($94.01 - $94.91) x £2 per cent stake
Loss = -$0.90 x £2 per cent stake
Loss = -90¢ x £2 per cent stake
Loss = -£180 loss

Note: McDonalds Rolling Daily equities market taken as of 06-Feb-13.
