How to Spread Bet on US Shares - McDonalds Rolling Daily
If you decide to speculate on US listed companies like McDonalds then one option could be spread trading on the McDonalds share price.
Looking at the Paddypowertrader spread trading site, they are showing the McDonalds Rolling Daily market at $66.51 - $66.60. Therefore, you could spread trade on the McDonalds share price:
- Moving above $66.60, or
- Moving below $66.51
When financial spread trading on US shares you trade in £x per cent. So, if your stake was £2 per cent and the McDonalds share price moves $0.05 then there would be a difference to your profits of £10. £2 per cent x $0.05 = £10.
Note that you can also spread bet on this market in Dollars or Euros, e.g. €x per cent.
Rolling Daily Shares Markets
An important aspect of this Rolling Daily Market is that in contrast with futures markets, there is no settlement date. Should your trade be left open at the end of the trading day, it just rolls over to the next day.
If you allow your trade to roll over and are spread betting on the market to:
- Move higher - then you will usually be charged a small overnight financing fee, or
- Move lower - then you will normally receive a small credit to your account

McDonalds Rolling Daily - US Equities Trading Example
Now, if we consider the spread of $66.51 - $66.60 and assume:
- you have done your market analysis, and
- you think that the McDonalds share price is likely to move above $66.60
then you could decide that you want to buy at $66.60 for a stake of £1 per cent.
So, you win £1 for every cent that the McDonalds shares increase and go higher than $66.60. Conversely, however, you will make a loss of £1 for every cent that the McDonalds market goes lower than $66.60.
Thinking of this in a slightly different way, should you buy a spread bet then your P&L is calculated by taking the difference between the closing price of the market and the price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that difference in price by your stake.
As a result, if after a few hours the shares moved higher then you could consider closing your spread bet to secure your profit.
As an example, should the market rise, the spread might change to $67.93 - $68.02. In order to close your position you would sell at $67.93. As a result, with the same £1 stake your profit would come to:
Profits (or losses) = (Final Price - Opening Price) x stake
Profits (or losses) = ($67.93 - $66.60) x £1 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = $1.33 x £1 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = 133¢ x £1 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = £133 profit
Speculating on shares, by spread trading or otherwise, is not easy. In the above example, you wanted the share price to rise. However, the share price can also fall.
If the McDonalds stock dropped then you could close your position to limit your losses.
So if the spread fell to $65.10 - $65.19 then this means you would close your spread bet by selling at $65.10. So your loss would be calculated as:
Profits (or losses) = (Final Price - Opening Price) x stake
Profits (or losses) = ($65.10 - $66.60) x £1 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = -$1.50 x £1 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = -150¢ x £1 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = -£150 loss
