How to Spread Bet on US Shares - 3M Rolling Daily
If an investor decides to speculate on US companies such as 3M then one option is to spread trade on the 3M share price.
Looking at the Paddypowertrader trading site, they are currently showing the 3M Rolling Daily market at $84.11 - $84.21. Therefore, you can spread trade on the 3M shares:
- Going above $84.21, or
- Going below $84.11
When spread betting on S&P 500 equities you trade in £x per cent. So, if you invest £2 per cent and the 3M shares move $0.05 then there would be a difference to your bottom line of £10. £2 per cent x $0.05 = £10.
Note that you can also spread bet on this market in Dollars or Euros, e.g. €x per cent.
Rolling Daily Shares Markets
Be aware that this is a Rolling Daily Market which means that there is no settlement date for this market. Should your trade be left open at the end of the trading day, it will stay open and roll over into the next day.
If a bet is rolled over and you are speculating on the market to:
- Move up - then you are usually charged a small overnight financing fee, or
- Move down - then a small payment will usually be credited to your account

3M Rolling Daily - US Shares Spread Betting Example
So, if you think about the spread of $84.11 - $84.21 and assume that:
- you have done your analysis, and
- you think that the 3M share price will increase and move higher than $84.21
then you might decide that you want to buy a spread bet at $84.21 for a stake of, for example, £1 per cent.
Therefore, you make a profit of £1 for every cent that the 3M shares move above $84.21. Conversely, however, it also means that you will lose £1 for every cent that the 3M market goes lower than $84.21.
Put another way, if you buy a spread bet then your profits (or losses) are calculated by taking the difference between the settlement price of the market and the price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that difference in price by your stake.
As a result, if after a few days the stock rose then you might consider closing your trade in order to guarantee your profit.
So if the market moved up then the spread, set by the spread trading company, might change to $85.68 - $85.78. To settle/close your trade you would sell at $85.68. Therefore, with the same £1 stake your profit would be:
P&L = (Settlement Price - Opening Price) x stake
P&L = ($85.68 - $84.21) x £1 per cent stake
P&L = $1.47 x £1 per cent stake
P&L = 147¢ x £1 per cent stake
P&L = £147 profit
Spread betting on equities is not easy. In this example, you had bet that the share price would rise. Naturally, it can also go down.
If the 3M share price decreased, contrary to your expectations, then you could choose to close your spread bet to stop any further losses.
So if the market fell to $82.95 - $83.05 then this means you would settle your trade by selling at $82.95. That would mean you would lose:
P&L = (Settlement Price - Opening Price) x stake
P&L = ($82.95 - $84.21) x £1 per cent stake
P&L = -$1.26 x £1 per cent stake
P&L = -126¢ x £1 per cent stake
P&L = -£126 loss

Where can I Find Candlestick Charts for 3M?
Like live prices, if you want to access candlestick charts for US shares then you generally need to open an account with a spread betting company that offers US shares. Note that accounts are subject to status.
If your application is approved then you can log on to their website and access their candlestick charts.
You can usually alter the charts to see market data by the tick, by the minute, by the hour, by the week etc. There are also other options that allow you to easily add analysis such as Bollinger Bands and Moving Averages.
As you can see the charts show how US share prices, as with most financial spread betting markets, are not perfect and how you can expect the prices to "gap".
