How to Spread Bet on Carpetright?
If you are looking to invest in firms like Carpetright then one solution could be spread trading on the Carpetright share price.
Looking at a spread trading platform like FinancialSpreads, you can see that they are offering the Carpetright Rolling Daily market at 683.6p - 691.9p. Therefore, an investor could spread bet on the Carpetright shares:
Moving above 691.9p, or
Moving below 683.6p
Whilst making a spread bet on FTSE 350 shares you trade in £x per penny. Therefore, if you chose to risk £2 per penny and the Carpetright share price changes by 36p then that would change your P&L by £72. £2 per penny x 36p = £72.
Rolling Daily Equities Markets
One important thing to note is that this is a Rolling Daily Market and so it does not have a closing date. You do not have to close your trade, should it still be open at the end of the trading day, it just rolls over to the next trading session.
If you allow your bet to roll over and are spread betting on the market to:
Rise - then you will pay a small overnight financing fee, or
Fall - then you'll normally receive a small credit to your account
For a more detailed guide to Rolling Daily Markets, including a fully worked example, please read our feature Rolling Daily Spread Betting.
Carpetright Rolling Daily - Equities Trading Example
Now, if you take the above spread of 683.6p - 691.9p and assume:
Then you could decide that you are going to buy at 691.9p for a stake of, let’s say, £5 per penny.
- You've completed your stock market research, and
- Your research leads you to think the Carpetright share price will push above 691.9p
With such a bet you make a profit of £5 for every penny that the Carpetright shares increase and move higher than 691.9p. Having said that, you will make a loss of £5 for every penny that the Carpetright market goes below 691.9p.
Put another way, if you ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your profits (or losses) are worked out by taking the difference between the settlement price of the market and the price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that difference in price by the stake.
As a result, if the shares moved higher then you could consider closing your spread bet in order to lock in your profit.
If that happened then the spread, set by the spread trading firm, might move up to 719.6p - 727.9p. To settle/close your trade you would sell at 719.6p. Therefore, with the same £5 stake this trade would make you a profit of:
Profit = (Closing Level - Initial Level) x stake
Profit = (719.6p - 691.9p) x £5 per penny stake
Profit = 27.7p x £5 per penny stake
Profit = £138.50 profit
Speculating on shares can work against you. In the above example, you had bet that the share price would rise. Nevertheless, the share price can also decrease.
If the Carpetright share price had started to drop then you might decide to settle/close your position in order to restrict your losses.
So if the market pulled back to 667.0p - 675.3p you would settle your position by selling at 667.0p. This would result in a loss of:
Loss = (Closing Level - Initial Level) x stake
Loss = (667.0p - 691.9p) x £5 per penny stake
Loss = -24.9p x £5 per penny stake
Loss = -£124.50 loss
Note - Carpetright Rolling Daily spread betting market accurate as of 31-Oct-12.
