How to Spread Bet on Carpetright

How to Spread Bet on Carpetright?

If an investor is looking to speculate on UK listed companies such as Carpetright then one solution could be spread trading on the Carpetright share price.

Looking at a financial spread betting site like SelftradeMarkets, you can see that they are offering the Carpetright Rolling Daily market at 683.6p - 691.9p. This means an investor can spread bet on the Carpetright share price:

  Carpetright Spread Trading Example Moving above 691.9p, or
  Carpetright Spread Betting Example Moving below 683.6p

When spread betting on UK shares you trade in £x per penny. As a result, if you decided to invest £2 per penny and the Carpetright share price moves 36p then that would change your P&L by £72. £2 per penny x 36p = £72.

Rolling Daily Shares Markets

This is a Rolling Daily Market which means that unlike a futures market, there is no settlement date. If your trade is still open at the end of the trading day, it just rolls over into the next session.

Should your trade roll over, if you are speculating that the market will:

  Carpetright Spread Betting Example Rise - then you'll be charged a small overnight financing fee, or
  Carpetright Spread Betting Example Fall - then a small payment is often credited to your account

Our article Rolling Daily Spread Betting goes into more detail about Rolling Daily Markets and includes a fully worked example.

Carpetright Rolling Daily - Shares Spread Betting Example

Now, if we take the above spread of 683.6p - 691.9p and make the assumptions:
  • You have done your stock market research, and
  • Your research suggests the Carpetright shares are likely to rise above 691.9p
Then you may decide that you are going to go long of the market at 691.9p for a stake of, for the sake of argument, £5 per penny.

So, you gain £5 for every penny that the Carpetright shares go higher than 691.9p. However, you will lose £5 for every penny that the Carpetright market moves lower than 691.9p.

Put another way, if you buy a spread bet then your profits (or losses) are calculated by taking the difference between the final price of the market and the initial price you bought the market at. You then multiply that price difference by your stake.

As a result, if the shares started to increase then you might want to close your position in order to guarantee your profit. Taking this a step further, if the market rose then the spread, set by the spread trading company, might change to 719.6p - 727.9p. To close your position you would sell at 719.6p. Therefore, with the same £5 stake your profit would be calculated as:

Profit = (Closing Level - Initial Level) x stake
Profit = (719.6p - 691.9p) x £5 per penny stake
Profit = 27.7p x £5 per penny stake
Profit = £138.50 profit

Speculating on shares, by spread trading or otherwise, may not go to plan. In this case, you wanted the share price to rise. Of course, it can also go down.

If the Carpetright share price had fallen then you could close your position in order to restrict your losses.

If the market fell to 667.0p - 675.3p then this means you would sell back your position at 667.0p. If so, that would mean you would lose:

Loss = (Closing Level - Initial Level) x stake
Loss = (667.0p - 691.9p) x £5 per penny stake
Loss = -24.9p x £5 per penny stake
Loss = -£124.50 loss

Note: Carpetright Rolling Daily spread betting price accurate as of 31-Oct-12.
