How to Spread Bet on TalkTalk

How to Spread Bet on TalkTalk?

If an investor wants to invest in UK companies like TalkTalk then one solution could be to spread trade on the TalkTalk share price.

Logging onto InterTrader, we can see they are pricing the TalkTalk Rolling Daily market at 189.9p - 190.9p. This means an investor could spread trade on the TalkTalk share price:

TalkTalk Spread Trading Example Increasing above 190.9p, or
TalkTalk Trading Example Decreasing below 189.9p

When financial spread betting on UK equities you trade in £x per penny. So, if you invested £3 per penny and the TalkTalk share price changes by 36p then that would make a difference to your bottom line of £108. £3 per penny x 36p = £108.

Rolling Daily Equities Markets

One important thing to note is that this is a 'Rolling Daily Market' and therefore there is no closing date for this market. If you decide to leave your trade open at the end of the day, it simply rolls over to the next trading day.

If your trade is rolled over and you are speculating that the market will:

TalkTalk Trading Example Move higher - then you'll pay a small overnight financing fee, or
TalkTalk Trading Example Move lower - then you will usually receive a small credit to your account

For a more detailed guide to Rolling Daily Markets, including a fully worked example, please read our feature Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

TalkTalk Rolling Daily - Equities Trading Example

Now, if we take the above spread of 189.9p - 190.9p and assume:
  • You've completed your research into the company, and
  • Your analysis suggests the TalkTalk share price is likely to go above 190.9p
Then you could decide that you are going to go long of the market at 190.9p and risk £20 per penny.

Therefore, you make a profit of £20 for every penny that the TalkTalk shares increase and move higher than 190.9p. However, you will make a loss of £20 for every penny that the TalkTalk market decreases below 190.9p.

Considering this from another angle, if you ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your profit/loss is found by taking the difference between the final price of the market and the initial price you bought the market at. You then multiply that difference in price by the stake.

As a result, if after a few trading sessions the shares started to move upwards then you could choose to close your spread bet in order to guarantee your profit. So if the market moved up then the spread, set by the spreads firm, might be adjusted to 196.2p - 197.2p. You would settle/close your trade by selling at 196.2p. So, with the same £20 stake your profit would be:

Your profit / loss = (Closing Level - Opening Level) x stake
Your profit / loss = (196.2p - 190.9p) x £20 per penny stake
Your profit / loss = 5.3p x £20 per penny stake
Your profit / loss = £106.00 profit

Trading equities, whether by spread betting or not, is not always straightforward. In this example, you wanted the share price to rise. Of course, it can also go down.

If the TalkTalk share price had started to drop then you could close your trade in order to restrict your losses.

If the spread dropped to 186.3p - 187.3p then you would sell back your position at 186.3p. So your loss would be calculated as:

Your profit / loss = (Closing Level - Opening Level) x stake
Your profit / loss = (186.3p - 190.9p) x £20 per penny stake
Your profit / loss = -4.6p x £20 per penny stake
Your profit / loss = -£92.00 loss

Note: TalkTalk Rolling Daily market correct as of 31-Oct-12.
