How to Spread Bet on the Mexico 35

How to Spread Bet on the Mexico 35?

As with many global financial markets, an investor can spread bet on stock market indices, like the Mexico 35, to either increase or decrease.

If you were to look at the IGIndex spread betting website, they are currently showing the Mexico 35 March Futures market at 36530 - 36600. As a result, you can spread trade on the Mexico 35 index:
  • Settling above 36600, or
  • Settling below 36530
On the closing date for this 'March' market, 18-Mar-11.

Whilst spread betting on the Mexico 35 index you trade in £x per point. As a result, if you invested £0.50 per point and the Mexico 35 moves 100 points then that would be a difference to your profit/loss of £50. £0.50 per point x 100 points = £50.

For short term trading on indices also see Indices Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

Mexico 35 Futures Trading Example

If you think about the spread of 36530 - 36600 and assume that:
  • you have completed your analysis of the markets, and
  • you think that the Mexico 35 index will close above 36600 by 18-Mar-11
then you could choose to buy at 36600 and risk, let’s say, £0.25 per point.

With such a spread bet you win £0.25 for every point that the Mexico 35 index rises higher than 36600. Of course, such a bet also means that you will make a loss of £0.25 for every point that the Mexico 35 market decreases lower than 36600.

Put another way, if you were to buy a spread bet then your profits (or losses) are found by taking the difference between the settlement price of the market and the initial price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that price difference by the stake.

Subsequently, if, on the expiry date, the Mexico 35 index finished higher at 37076, then:

Profits (or losses) = (Settlement Level - Initial Level) x stake
Profits (or losses) = (37076 - 36600) x £0.25 per point stake
Profits (or losses) = 476 x £0.25 per point stake
Profits (or losses) = £119.00 profit

Trading stock market indices, whether by spread trading or otherwise, is not straightforward. With the above, you wanted the index to increase. Nevertheless, it might decrease.

If the Mexico 35 decreased and settled at 36161, you would end up losing this trade.

Profits (or losses) = (Settlement Level - Initial Level) x stake
Profits (or losses) = (36161 - 36600) x £0.25 per point stake
Profits (or losses) = -439 x £0.25 per point stake
Profits (or losses) = -£109.75 loss

Note: Mexico 35 March Futures market taken as of 24-Feb-11.
