How to Spread Bet on the Korea 200

How to Spread Bet on the Korea 200?

As with a lot of financial markets, you can place a spread bet on stock market indices, like the Korea 200, to rise or fall.

If an investor was to look at the IGIndex website, they are giving the Korea 200 March Futures market at 25708 - 25738. This means you can spread bet on the Korea 200 index:
  • Closing above 25738, or
  • Closing below 25708
On the closing date for this 'March' market, 10-Mar-11.

When placing a spread bet on the Korea 200 index you trade in £x per point. So, if you choose to risk £1 per point and the Korea 200 moves 75 points then that would be a difference to your profits (or losses) of £75. £1 per point x 75 points = £75.

For short term trading on indices also see Indices Spread Betting.

Korea 200 Futures Spread Betting Example

Now, if we think about the spread of 25708 - 25738 and make the assumptions:
  • You have analysed the markets, and
  • You feel that the Korea 200 index will settle above 25738 by 10-Mar-11
Then you may decide that you are going to buy at 25738 for a stake of £0.50 per point.

So, you gain £0.50 for every point that the Korea 200 index pushes higher than 25738. Having said that, you will make a loss of £0.50 for every point that the Korea 200 market goes below 25738.

Considering this from another angle, should you ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your P&L is worked out by taking the difference between the final price of the market and the price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that difference in price by your stake.

So if, on the expiry date, the Korea 200 index settled higher at 25944, then:

P&L = (Final Price - Initial Price) x stake
P&L = (25944 - 25738) x £0.50 per point stake
P&L = 206 x £0.50 per point stake
P&L = £103.00 profit

Spread betting may not go to plan. In this example, you wanted the index to go up. Naturally, the index could fall.

If the Korea 200 decreased and settled lower at 25506, then this means you would end up making a loss on this trade.

P&L = (Final Price - Initial Price) x stake
P&L = (25506 - 25738) x £0.50 per point stake
P&L = -232 x £0.50 per point stake
P&L = -£116.00 loss

Note - Korea 200 March Futures spread betting price taken as of 24-Feb-11.

Where Can I Find Free Live Korea 200 Prices?

If you want to access quick live market information then you could do worse than opening an account with a spread betting company like IG Index.

Also, you don't have to trade with them, if you just open an account (which is free to do) then their data is free. The catch? You'll get the odd email or letter from them. In the example below you can also see that their free charts are also useful.
