How to Spread Bet on the Taiwan 50

How to Spread Bet on the Taiwan 50?

As with many global financial markets, investors can speculate on indices, such as the Taiwan Index, to either increase or decrease.

Looking at the IGIndex site, they are giving the Taiwan Index February Futures market at 304.4 - 305.0. As a result, you could spread bet on the Taiwan Index:
  • Finishing above 305.0, or
  • Finishing below 304.4
On the expiry date for this 'February' market, 25-Feb-11.

When spread trading on the Taiwan Index you trade in £x per point. So, if you decided to risk £15 per point and the Taiwan Index moves 5.0 points then there would be a difference to your profit/loss of £75. £15 per point x 5.0 points = £75.

For short term trading on stock market indices also see Stock Market Indices Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

Taiwan Index Futures Spread Betting Example

Now, if you think about the above spread of 304.4 - 305.0 and assume:
  • You have done your research, and
  • Your research leads you to feel that the Taiwan Index will finish higher than 305.0 by 25-Feb-11
Then you might go long of the market at 305.0 and invest, for example, £20 per point.

Therefore, you make a profit of £20 for every point that the Taiwan Index moves above 305.0. Nevertheless, such a bet also means that you will lose £20 for every point that the Taiwan Index market goes lower than 305.0.

Put another way, if you ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your P&L is calculated by taking the difference between the final price of the market and the price you bought the market at. You then multiply that difference in price by the stake.

Subsequently, if, on the settlement date, the Taiwan Index closed higher at 308.7, then:

Profit / loss = (Closing Value - Opening Value) x stake
Profit / loss = (308.7 - 305.0) x £20 per point stake
Profit / loss = 3.7 x £20 per point stake
Profit / loss = £74.00 profit

Financial spread betting can work against you. With this example, you had bet that the index would increase. Naturally, it could decrease.

If the Taiwan Index had fallen, closing lower at 300.4, then you would end up making a loss on this trade.

Profit / loss = (Closing Value - Opening Value) x stake
Profit / loss = (300.4 - 305.0) x £20 per point stake
Profit / loss = -4.6 x £20 per point stake
Profit / loss = -£92.00 loss

Note: Taiwan Index February Futures market accurate as of 24-Feb-11.
