How to Spread Bet on the Greece 20

How to Spread Bet on the Greece 20?

As with a range of financial markets, it is possible to spread bet on stock market indices, such as the Greece 20, to go up or down.

If an investor was to look at the IGIndex spread betting site, they are valuing the Greece 20 March Futures market at 743.3 - 748.0. Therefore, an investor can spread bet on the Greece 20 index:
  • Settling higher than 748.0, or
  • Settling lower than 743.3
On the settlement date for this 'March' market, 18-Mar-11.

Whilst financial spread trading on the Greece 20 index you trade in £x per point. As a result, should you choose to invest £10 per point and the Greece 20 moves 5.0 points then that would alter your P&L by £50. £10 per point x 5.0 points = £50.

For short term trading on indices also see Indices Spread Betting.

Greece 20 Futures Trading Example

If you think about the above spread of 743.3 - 748.0 and make the assumptions that:
  • You have analysed your chosen market, and
  • You feel that the Greece 20 index will close higher than 748.0 by 18-Mar-11
Then you could decide that you want to buy at 748.0 for a stake of £5 per point.

With such a bet you make a profit of £5 for every point that the Greece 20 index rises above 748.0. Having said that, such a bet also means that you will lose £5 for every point that the Greece 20 market decreases below 748.0.

Thinking of this in a slightly different way, if you were to ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your P&L is calculated by taking the difference between the closing price of the market and the price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that price difference by the stake.

Therefore, if, on the closing date, the Greece 20 market settled at 763.0, then:

Profit / loss = (Final Price - Initial Price) x stake
Profit / loss = (763.0 - 748.0) x £5 per point stake
Profit / loss = 15.0 x £5 per point stake
Profit / loss = £75.00 profit

Speculating on stock market indices, whether by spread betting or otherwise, may not go to plan. In this example, you wanted the index to rise. Naturally, the index can also fall.

If the Greece 20 decreased, settling at 731.2, then this means you would make a loss.

Profit / loss = (Final Price - Initial Price) x stake
Profit / loss = (731.2 - 748.0) x £5 per point stake
Profit / loss = -16.8 x £5 per point stake
Profit / loss = -£84.00 loss

Note - Greece 20 March Futures market quoted as of 24-Feb-11.

If you want to access quick live market information then you could do worse than opening an account with a spread betting company like IG Index.

If you want to review financial spread betting prices and live charts for the Greece 20, you generally need a spread trading account.

Please note that all accounts are subject to suitability and status checks.

Should your account application be accepted, you will be able to log on and check the live charts and the current pricing. Usually, these will be free, however, the catch is that you'll probably get an occasional sales letter and/or call from the relevant financial spread betting provider.
