How to Spread Bet on the Belgium 20

How to Spread Bet on the Belgium 20?

As with a range of financial markets, you can place a spread bet on indices, such as the Belgium 20, to rise or fall.

Looking at IGIndex, you can see they are currently showing the Belgium 20 October Futures market at 2359.00 - 2368.50. This means you can put a spread bet on the Belgium 20 index:

Belgium 20 Trading Example Settling above 2368.50, or
Belgium 20 Spread Trading Example Settling below 2359.00

On the settlement date for this 'October' market, 19-Oct-12.

When making a spread bet on the Belgium 20 index you trade in £x per point. So, if you decide to have a stake of £5 per point and the Belgium 20 moves 26 points then that would make a difference to your profits (or losses) of £130. £5 per point x 26 points = £130.

For short term trading on indices also see Indices Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

Belgium 20 Futures - Indices Spread Trading Example

Now, if you think about the above spread of 2359.00 - 2368.50 and assume that:
  • You have completed your market research, and
  • You think that the Belgium 20 index will finish higher than 2368.50 by 19-Oct-12
Then you could buy a spread bet at 2368.50 and risk, let’s say, £3 per point.

Therefore, you win £3 for every point that the Belgium 20 index increases above 2368.50. Having said that, you will make a loss of £3 for every point that the Belgium 20 market goes below 2368.50.

Looked at another way, should you ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your profits (or losses) are worked out by taking the difference between the closing price of the market and the price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that difference in price by the stake.

Subsequently, if, on the closing date, the Belgium 20 market settled higher at 2404.00, then:

Profit / loss = (Closing Value - Opening Value) x stake
Profit / loss = (2404.00 - 2368.50) x £3 per point stake
Profit / loss = 35.50 x £3 per point stake
Profit / loss = £106.50 profit

Speculating on stock market indices, whether by spread betting or not, is not straightforward. With the above, you wanted the Belgian stock market index to increase. Nevertheless, it could decrease.

If the Belgian stock market had fallen and the Belgium 20 closed lower at 2337.70, then you would end up losing this spread bet.

Profit / loss = (Closing Value - Opening Value) x stake
Profit / loss = (2337.70 - 2368.50) x £3 per point stake
Profit / loss = -30.80 x £3 per point stake
Profit / loss = -£92.40 loss

Note - Belgium 20 October Futures market correct as of 10-Oct-11.
