A Very Popular Football Bet for this Summer...Player Goal Minutes

This is a highly popular market in sports spread betting. Clients lose more often than not but when they win they can win big.

It’s not difficult to see Christiano Ronaldo being very popular in this market over the summer.

Player Goal Minutes refers to the total minutes of all the goals scored by an individual player in a match.
  • If a player scored two goals in a match, one in the 33rd minute and the other in the 52nd minute, his Result (or Make-up) result would be 85 Total Goal Minutes
  • If he didn’t score his Result (Make-up) would be 0 Total Goal Minutes
  • If he scores one goal in injury time, eg the 92nd minute his result (make-up) would be 90 minutes
  • Note that extra-time goals do not count unless specifically stated
  • Penalties in normal time do count. Penalties during a penalty shoot out do not count unless specifically stated

So back to the annoyingly handy Portuguese Winger. Ronaldo’s his Total Goal Minutes for a game might be 30 – 33 minutes.

Scenario 1 – Selling a Player – Betting on a Player to do Badly

If you thought he would have a tough time and might not score in the game, you would bet low on his goal minutes at 30.

Let’s say you stake £2 bet minute.

If Ronaldo had scored but only in the 13th minute his Total Goal Minutes would be 13.

When ‘Selling’ in spread betting your profit / loss:

= (Opening Price - Result) x stake
= (30 minutes - 13 minutes) x £2 per minute
= 17 minutes x £2 per minute
= £34 profit

If, however, he had scored again in the 41st minute, you would have lost. His Total Goal Minutes Result would be 17 + 41= 58 minutes.

= (30 minutes - 58 minutes) x £2 per minute
= - 28 minutes x £2 per minute
= -£56 Loss

Scenario 2 – Buying a Player – Betting on a Player to do Well

The Popular Bet? - Buy Player Goal Minutes!

With Ronaldo many punters will Buy ‘Ronaldo Player Goal Minutes’, so if his spread was 30 - 33 you would Buy at 33 minutes.

Let’s say you bet £4 bet minute.

What if he had a nightmare first half and then got injured and taken off without scoring? His Goal minutes would be 0 minutes.

When you buy a spread bet your profit / loss:

= (Result – Opening Price) x stake
= (0 - 33) x 4 per minute
= -33 minutes x £4 per minute
= -£132 Loss

Not great! So why do punters love goal minutes? Because players scoring one or two late goals can really change things.

If the Man U winger continued his good form and scored in the 78th minutes. His make-up (result) would be 78 total goal minutes.

Profit = (Result – Opening Price) x stake
= (78 - 33) x 4 per minute
= 45 minutes x £4 per minute
= £185 profit

And what if he scored again in the 85th minute? Well his total goal minutes would be 78 + 85 = 163 minutes

Your profit = (163 - 33) x £4 per minute
= 130 minutes x £4 per minute
= £520 profit!

And that is what makes this such an exciting (and volatile!) market. Punters like to Buy and you need your player to be in form. If he’s not, or if he’s unlucky, you run the risk of losing. But if he’s looking good then…

Where can I spread bet on Player Goal Minutes?

Some thought that cards would be flying round like confetti this summer, but at the time of writing just a single red has been shown and only 3.5 yellows per game. Sporting Index’s Total Yellow Cards spread has been pushed down 19 to: 122 yellows -126 yellows.

Total Reds are down 2.25. The red cards spreads is now: 5.25 red cards - 6 red cards.

England play Trinidad for only the second time in their history on Sunday and the second time in the space of two years.

Buyers of English supremacy at 1.8 goals will be hoping for at least a repeat of the 2-0 win at the World Cup in Germany. Sellers at 1.6 goals will be pleased to hear that Trinidad have won three and drawn one of the last four home games, but may be slightly worried that these have come against the likes of El Salvador, Guatemala and St Vincent & Grenadines. England meanwhile haven’t been too strong on their travels of late and have lost two of their last three on the road.

Sellers of the time of the first England goal at 36 minutes will be concerned that it took 83 minutes to break the deadlock against the Trinidadians at the World Cup.

The other significant friendly for British sports fans this weekend is Wales’ trip to Holland. The Welsh have played the Dutch five times in their history and have lost all five. In fact, buyers of Dutch supremacy at 1.4 goals will be delighted to hear that Holland have scored an astonishing 14 goals the last three times they’ve met Wales. The last game was a 7-1 drubbing in Eindhoven in 1996, which saw goals from Denis Bergkamp and both of the de Boer brothers. This is in addition to the Dutch scoring 10 goals in their past three games. Beware anyone selling total goals @ 2.5 goals.

Having said that Wales are unbeaten in six and have won their last three games against Norway, Luxembourg and Iceland, scoring six and conceding none.

What has been described by many as the richest match in football takes place at Wembley on Saturday. It is certainly a tale of two City’s, as Bristol and Hull try to book their place amongst the Premier League elite. Hull are 0.3-0.5 favourites with Sporting Index, but buyers will be concerned that they have failed to beat Bristol in the last nine contests between the clubs. In fact, sellers at 0.3 will be overjoyed to hear that Bristol have won seven of the last nine meetings.

Championship play-off finals can often be tight, low scoring affairs and sellers of total goals at 2.3 will be pleased to hear that three of the last four finals have only seen one goal scored in each game. Four of the last seven finals have had one goal or fewer, but the other three games have all ended up 3-0. Having said that, the last 10 games between Bristol and Hull have averaged 3.1 goals per game.
