[05:00am update] The minutes of the Bank of England's December monetary policy meeting revealed that the monetary policy committee (MPC) voted unanimously in favour of maintaining interest rates at 0.5% and quantitative easing at £375.0 billion.

The ILO unemployment rate in the UK fell to 7.1% for the period of September to November, compared to a rate of 7.4% in the previous three months.

The number of unemployment benefits claims in the UK dropped by 24.0K in December, compared to a revised 34.3K fall in the earlier month. The Claimant count rate declined to 3.7% in December, marking the lowest rate since December 2008 and from 3.8% in the earlier month.

Average earnings including bonus in the UK rose 0.9% YoY for three months ended November, following a similar rise for the previous three months. Average earnings excluding bonus rose 0.9% YoY for three months ended November, compared to a rise of 0.8% in the previous three months.

The Public sector net cash requirement (PSNCR) in the UK recorded a surplus of £9.0 billion in December, following a revised surplus of £0.7 billion in the November. Public sector net borrowing recorded a surplus of £10.4 billion in December, compared to a revised surplus of £15.1 billion in the previous month.

The Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) reported that the number of mortgage applications in the US rose 4.7% in the week ended 17 January, following an 11.9% increase in the previous week.

The latest survey from HSBC and Markit Economics revealed the manufacturing PMI in China dropped to 49.6 in January from 50.5 in December.

The Conference Board Leading Economic Index for China increased 0.4% in December, following a 1.3% rise in November.
