How to Spread Bet on Orange Juice?

As with many commodity markets, an investor can speculate on futures, such as Orange Juice, to go up or down.

If you look at a financial spread betting platform like Inter Trader, you can see they are currently offering the Orange Juice July Futures market at $146.00 – $146.60. This means you can spread bet on Orange Juice:

Orange Juice Trading Example Settling higher than $146.60, or
Orange Juice Spread Betting Example Settling lower than $146.00

On the settlement date for this ‘July’ market, 29-Jun-12.

When spread betting on Orange Juice you trade in £x per $0.01. Therefore, if you choose to have a stake of £2 per $0.01 and Orange Juice moves $0.40 then there would be a difference to your profits (or losses) of £80. £2 per $0.01 x $0.40 = £80.

Orange Juice Futures Spread Betting Example

Taking the above spread of $146.00 – $146.60, let’s make the assumptions that:

  • You’ve analysed the market, and
  • Your analysis leads you to think that the Orange Juice market will settle higher than $146.60 by 29-Jun-12
If so, you might decide to buy at $146.60 and risk, for example, £2 per $0.01.

Therefore, you make a profit of £2 for every $0.01 that Orange Juice pushes above $146.60. Nevertheless, such a bet also means that you will make a loss of £2 for every $0.01 that the Orange Juice market decreases below $146.60.

In other words, should you ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your P&L is worked out by taking the difference between the settlement price of the market and the initial price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that price difference by the stake.

As a result, if, on the expiry date, Orange Juice settled at $147.55, then:

P&L = (Closing Value – Opening Value) x stake
P&L = ($147.55 – $146.60) x £2 per $0.01
P&L = $0.95 x £2 per $0.01
P&L = £190 profit

Trading commodities futures is not always profitable. With the above, you had bet that the futures market would go up. Nevertheless, the orange juice market could also fall.

If Orange Juice decreased, closing at $145.57, then you would end up making a loss and losing on this spread bet.

P&L = (Closing Value – Opening Value) x stake
P&L = ($145.57 – $146.60) x £2 per $0.01
P&L = -$1.03 x £2 per $0.01
P&L = -£206 loss

Note: Orange Juice July Futures commodities market taken as of 26-Apr-12.
