How to Spread Bet on BHP Billiton

How to Spread Bet on BHP Billiton?

Should an investor want to speculate on companies like BHP Billiton then one option could be to spread trade on the BHP Billiton share price.

Looking at a financial spread betting platform like FinancialSpreads.com, we can see that they have priced the BHP Billiton Rolling Daily market at 2036.9p - 2039.6p. As a result, an investor could put a spread bet on the BHP Billiton share price:

BHP Billiton Spread Trading Example Moving above 2039.6p, or
BHP Billiton Trading Example Moving below 2036.9p

Whilst spread trading on UK equities you trade in £x per penny. So, if you choose to invest £3 per penny and the BHP Billiton share price changes by 34p then that would be a difference to your profit/loss of £102. £3 per penny x 34p = £102.

Rolling Daily Equities Markets

One important thing to note is that this is a 'Rolling Daily Market' and therefore unlike a futures market, there is no settlement date. You do not have to close your trade, should it still be open at the end of the trading day, it will just roll over into the next day.

If your bet is rolled over and you are speculating that the market will:

BHP Billiton Trading Example Move higher - then you are charged a small overnight financing fee, or
BHP Billiton Trading Example Move lower - then a small payment is usually credited to your account

For a more detailed breakdown of Rolling Daily Markets please read our article Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

BHP Billiton Rolling Daily - Shares Trading Example

So, if we take the spread of 2036.9p - 2039.6p and assume:
  • You have done your equities analysis, and
  • Your research suggests that the BHP Billiton shares are likely to increase and move higher than 2039.6p
Then you could decide to buy at 2039.6p for a stake of £3 per penny.

So, you make a profit of £3 for every penny that the BHP Billiton shares push above 2039.6p. On the other hand, it also means you will make a loss of £3 for every penny that the BHP Billiton market decreases lower than 2039.6p.

Put another way, if you buy a spread bet then your P&L is worked out by taking the difference between the settlement price of the market and the price you bought the market at. You then multiply that price difference by the stake.

With this in mind, if after a few days the share price started to move upwards then you could choose to close your trade so that you can lock in your profit. So if the market moved up then the spread, determined by the spread betting company, could be adjusted to 2080.4p - 2083.1p. You would close your position by selling at 2080.4p. Accordingly, with the same £3 stake:

Your profits (or losses) = (Final Price - Opening Price) x stake
Your profits (or losses) = (2080.4p - 2039.6p) x £3 per penny stake
Your profits (or losses) = 40.8p x £3 per penny stake
Your profits (or losses) = £122.40 profit

Financial spread betting can go against you. With this example, you wanted the share price to rise. Nevertheless, it might fall.

If the BHP Billiton stock decreased, contrary to your expectations, then you might choose to close your trade in order to limit your losses.

So if the market pulled back to 1993.7p - 1996.4p then this means you would close your spread bet by selling at 1993.7p. That would mean you would lose:

Your profits (or losses) = (Final Price - Opening Price) x stake
Your profits (or losses) = (1993.7p - 2039.6p) x £3 per penny stake
Your profits (or losses) = -45.9p x £3 per penny stake
Your profits (or losses) = -£137.70 loss

Note: BHP Billiton Rolling Daily spread quoted as of 19-Oct-12.
