How to Spread Bet on CHF/JPY?
As with a wide range of financial markets, investors can spread bet on foreign exchange pairs, such as CHF/JPY, to either rise or fall.Looking at a financial spread betting website like FinancialSpreads.com, you can see they are currently showing the CHF/JPY Rolling Daily market at ¥82.868 – ¥82.898. As a result, you can spread bet on the CHF/JPY pair:

When financial spread betting on CHF/JPY you trade in £x per point where a point is ¥0.010 of the pairs movement. Therefore, if you chose to have a stake of £4 per point and CHF/JPY moves 30.0 points then that would be a difference to your profits (or losses) of £120. £4 per point x ¥0.300 = £4 per point x 30.0 points = £120.
Rolling Daily Foreign Exchange Markets
This is a Rolling Daily Market which means that unlike a normal spread betting futures market, there is no closing date. As a result, if your trade is still open at the end of the trading day, it will roll over to the next session.If a forex bet is rolled over then you normally pay a small overnight financing fee. You can learn more in our feature Rolling Daily Spread Betting.
CHF/JPY Trading Example 1
Now, if you consider the above spread of ¥82.868 – ¥82.898 and make the assumptions that:- You’ve done your research, and
- Your research suggests the CHF/JPY rate will go higher than ¥82.898
With such a bet you make a profit of £2 for every point (¥0.010) that the CHF/JPY rate rises above ¥82.898. On the other hand, it also means you will make a loss of £2 for every point that the CHF/JPY market falls lower than ¥82.898.
Looking at this from another angle, if you buy a spread bet then your P&L is worked out by taking the difference between the settlement price of the market and the initial price you bought the market at. You then multiply that price difference by your stake.
Therefore, if after a few sessions the rate moved higher then you could consider closing your position and therefore guarantee your profits.
Therefore, if the market moved up then the spread might move to ¥83.478 – ¥83.508. You would close/settle your spread bet by selling at ¥83.478. Therefore, with the same £2 stake this trade would make you a profit of:
Profit = (Settlement Level – Initial Level) x stake
Profit = (¥83.478 – ¥82.898) x £2 per point stake
Profit = ¥0.580 x £2 per point stake
Profit = 58.0 points x £2 per point stake
Profit = £116.00 profit
Speculating on FX, whether by spread trading or otherwise, may not go to plan. With the above, you wanted the forex pair to increase. Naturally, the forex rate could fall.
If the CHF/JPY market began to fall then you might decide to settle/close your spread bet to limit your losses.
Should the market drop to ¥82.401 – ¥82.431 then this means you would close your position by selling at ¥82.401. That would mean you would make a loss of:
Loss = (Settlement Level – Initial Level) x stake
Loss = (¥82.401 – ¥82.898) x £2 per point stake
Loss = -¥0.497 x £2 per point stake
Loss = -49.7 points x £2 per point stake
Loss = -£99.40 loss

How to Spread Bet on Swiss Franc – Yen – Example 2
Looking at a spread betting platform like Tradefair, you can see that they are pricing the Swiss Franc – Yen Rolling Daily market at ¥84.679 – ¥84.709. Therefore, an investor could put a spread bet on the Swiss Franc – Yen rate:

Whilst financial spread trading on Swiss Franc – Yen you trade in £x per point where a point is ¥0.010 of the pairs movement. So, if you decide to have a stake of £3 per point and Swiss Franc – Yen moves 35.0 points then that would make a difference to your profits (or losses) of £105. £3 per point x ¥0.350 = £3 per point x 35.0 points = £105.
Now, if we continue with the above spread of ¥84.679 – ¥84.709 and assume:
- You’ve completed your market research, and
- Your research leads you to think that the Swiss Franc – Yen rate will move higher than ¥84.709
With such a bet you win £2 for every point (¥0.010) that the Swiss Franc – Yen pair rises above ¥84.709. Nevertheless, you will lose £2 for every point that the Swiss Franc – Yen market moves below ¥84.709.
Looking at this from another angle, if you were to buy a spread bet then your profit/loss is calculated by taking the difference between the closing price of the market and the price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that difference in price by the stake.
With this in mind, if after a few hours the forex rate moved higher then you might want to close your spread bet so that you can lock in your profit.
Taking this a step further, if the market did go up then the spread, set by the spread betting company, might move up to ¥85.133 – ¥85.163. In order to close your spread bet you would sell at ¥85.133. Accordingly, with the same £2 stake you would calculate your profit as:
Profits (or losses) = (Settlement Price – Opening Price) x stake
Profits (or losses) = (¥85.133 – ¥84.709) x £2 per point stake
Profits (or losses) = ¥0.424 x £2 per point stake
Profits (or losses) = 42.4 points x £2 per point stake
Profits (or losses) = £84.80 profit
Financial spread trading is not always simple. In this case, you wanted the FX pair to rise. However, it might go down.
If the Swiss Franc – Yen market began to drop then you might choose to close your trade to limit your losses.
If the spread dropped to ¥84.158 – ¥84.188 then this means you would settle your trade by selling at ¥84.158. That would mean you would make a loss of:
Profits (or losses) = (Settlement Price – Opening Price) x stake
Profits (or losses) = (¥84.158 – ¥84.709) x £2 per point stake
Profits (or losses) = -¥0.551 x £2 per point stake
Profits (or losses) = -55.1 points x £2 per point stake
Profits (or losses) = -£110.20 loss
Note: Swiss Franc – Yen Rolling Daily spread betting market correct as of 18-Sep-12.
