Editor’s comment: We have now added a selection of video guides on how to use the IG platform and IG charts, please see http://www.cleanfinancial.com/ig_index.php#using_…. There are also videos on the IG mobile and iPad apps.
Editor’s comment: A genuinely interesting new product from IG – http://www.cleanfinancial.com/ig_chrome_extension… – if you use the Chrome browser you can add the IG Dealing Extension (plug-in) and trade directly from sites like FT.com, Reuters, Bloomberg etc.
I have a few spreads accounts and IG are not perfect, they have some rather wide spreads e.g. in normal market hours Hong Kong (10pts), Italy 40 (8pts) and Copper (40pts).
However they are still ahead of most firms and they should win almost every award.
The site is complex and occasionally confusing because there are so many options (it's not great for a newbie) and so, if there was an award for user-friendly they wouldn't win.
Apart from that, IG might as well have a chair on the stage at the next ceremony. Of course, it's not as easy to get a refill on the stage.
Editor's comment: IG now let clients trade Bitcoin binary bets and binary options, for more details see http://www.cleanfinancial.com/spread_betting_on_b…. Take care though, it is a volatile market.
Editor's comment: For those who haven't seen, you can now access IG via the IG.com domain. It cannot have been cheap to buy that from Brazil's third largest ISP when the ISP used the domain for its main website.
The exact cost details aren't out but apparently it was the second largest sale of a two-letter domain (the largest was YP.com which was sold to AT&T for $3.85m in 2008).
So we are talking a healthy sum (and a very long-term investment).
Editor's comment: IG will soon be adding MT4 to their platform. They are Beta testing it at the moment so I can’t imagine a launch is far away.
Editor's comment: IG are normally pretty good with grey markets and today is no exception as they have opened a grey market on the Royal Mail IPO.
A warning though, it looks like quite a wide spread. Having said that, we haven't seen any other Royal Mail grey markets yet. For more details see: http://www.cleanfinancial.com/royal_mail_spread_b….
The market has only just opened so don't expect to see much chart data.
Editor's comment: IG are looking to add stock broking to their spread betting and CFD business.
But don't hold your breath, it sounds like a full service could be 2 years away. There are more details on the Financial Times website, http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/571240cc-f3a7-11e2-942f….
Editor’s comment: The 2013 Investment Trends CFD Report suggests 38% of Australia's CFD traders use IG as their main account.
Editor's comment: And IG have added a grey market on the Twitter IPO http://www.cleanfinancial.com/spread_betting_and_….
Editor's comment. IG have released their Q1 numbers and revenue was up 15% year on year.
IG said it made a 'solid start' to 2013 but gave a cautious outlook for the year ahead.
IG Group shares (FTSE 250) are up nearly 30% so far this year and closed at 594.64p yesterday, valuing the firm at £2.15bn.
Editors comment: IG are clearly seeing more business for their US stocks and they have extended the market opening times for:
Apple,
Bank of America,
Facebook,
Google,
SPDR S+P 500 ETF
The above markets will be open 9am to 1am (Mon to Thur) and 9am to 10pm (Fri), London times.
Investors should note that trading orders, stops etc. can trigger during these new trading hours, see IG for details.
Editor’s comment: No surprises for which company picked up the most spread betting and CFD awards this year. IG need to get down to Ikea and buy a new trophy cabinet.
The FTSE 250 firm picked up Best Spread Betting Service (Shares Magazine Awards), CFD Provider of the Year (FT and Investors Chronicle Investment Awards) and Best Overall Online Finance Provider (MoneyAM Awards).
For more details and a list of the other awards see http://www.cleanfinancial.com/ig_index.php#ig_ind…
Editor's comment: It's rare that I have something negative to say about IG, but I've just tried to call them about a market query.
If you go to 'Contact Us' in their 'Help and Support' section, there are no phone numbers. After a few clicks you find your way to an online form. It's not a great experience.
Having said that, you do get the customer support number when they email you back.
Don't worry, I've added the IG customer support number to the contact section of our IG review page.
Editor’s comment: Yes, the support number should be easily found in the help section.
Your mistake is that you were logged in.
If you log out they have listed it on the IG.com homepage and many other pages across the site. You silly billy.
Editors comments: IG have closed their Bitcoin binary market. With Spreadex suspending their Bitcoin spread betting markets 2-3 weeks ago, the number of places that you can trade Bitcoin is rapidly diminishing, for more on Bitcoin trading see http://www.cleanfinancial.com/spread_betting_on_b….
IG Group H1 pre-tax profits up 17% to £95.1m. Net trading revenues for H1 are +8% at £182.7m. Nice work if you can get it.
Why is it always IG?
They are at it again with more interesting updates.
IG have now opened their FTSE 100, DAX and Wall St markets at 8am on Sundays (London time).
This is a very positive feature for those who want to trade the news that comes out over the weekend. Just expect some quite wide spreads.
Looking at binaries, their Bitcoin, political and Sprint markets will now also open on Sundays.
Here they go again with some more technical innovation.
IG have released an app for the Apple Watch http://www.cleanfinancial.com/apple_watch_app_spr…
OK, I'm not impressed by the app but that's more to do with the limits of the watch than IG's app.
I don't expect to be able to read a chart on such as small screen so I can understand why they haven't added one.
Likewise, IG have had to strip off some of the other functionality you'd want. E.g. you can't create / move Stops – this could get very dangerous. Of course you can still create / move Stops from any other IG platform.
But why would I want to log into two separate platforms when I've got the IG iPhone app in my pocket? (and the Apple Watch won't work if your iPhone isn't working).
So…nice work IG. A nice piece of kit and you've pushed the industry forward again. Sadly the Apple Watch itself makes for a poor trading platform.
Editor's comment: A rare (and small) step backwards for IG.
They no longer send clients trade confirmations by txt message. I imagine this will irritate a few low volume investors but where will those investors go? I'm not sure if any of the other serious firms offer txt confirmations. If you know any that do, please let me know.
Thanks
Jake
Why Doesn't Everyone Just Use IG?
Many investors do but there are a few reasons why some don't: http://www.cleanfinancial.com/ig_index.php#why-do…
