How to Spread Bet on Baidu? |
If an investor is looking to speculate on US companies such as Baidu then one possibility could be to spread bet on the Baidu share price.
Looking at a website like FinancialSpreads.com, we can see that they are valuing the Baidu Rolling Daily market at $96.96 - $97.14. This means an investor could spread trade on the Baidu share price:
Rising above $97.14, or
Falling below $96.96
When financial spread betting on S&P 500 shares you trade in £x per cent. Therefore, if you chose to risk £4 per cent and the Baidu shares move $0.22 then that would be a difference to your profits (or losses) of £88. £4 per cent x $0.22 = £88.
Note that you are also able to trade this market in Euros or Dollars, e.g. €x per cent.
Rolling Daily Equities Markets
This is a Rolling Daily Market which means that there is no predetermined closing date for this market. If you decide to leave your trade open at the end of the day, it just rolls over to the next day.
If your position is rolled over and you are speculating that the market will:
Go up - then you are charged a small overnight financing fee, or
Go down - then you'll normally receive a small credit to your account
For a more detailed example see Rolling Daily Spread Betting.
Baidu Rolling Daily - US Shares Spread Betting Example |
So, if we consider the spread of $96.96 - $97.14 and make the assumptions:
- You've done your analysis of the equities market, and
- Your research suggests that the Baidu share price looks like it will go above $97.14
Then you might decide to go long of the market at $97.14 for a stake of £2 per cent.
With such a bet you win £2 for every cent that the Baidu shares rise higher than $97.14. However, you will make a loss of £2 for every cent that the Baidu market falls lower than $97.14.
Looking at this from another angle, if you ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your profits (or losses) are found by taking the difference between the closing price of the market and the price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that price difference by the stake.
With this in mind, if after a few hours the share price started to increase then you might think about closing your spread bet and therefore guarantee your profits.
So if the market increased then the spread, determined by the spread betting company, might change to $97.77 - $97.95. In order to close your position you would sell at $97.77. As a result, with the same £2 stake this trade would result in a profit of:
Profit = (Final Price - Opening Price) x stake
Profit = ($97.77 - $97.14) x £2 per cent stake
Profit = $0.63 x £2 per cent stake
Profit = 63¢ x £2 per cent stake
Profit = £126 profit
Speculating on shares, whether by spread betting or not, is not always straightforward. With this example, you had bet that the share price would increase. Nevertheless, the share price might fall.
If the Baidu shares decreased, contrary to your expectations, then you might choose to close your trade in order to restrict your losses.
So if the market pulled back to $96.60 - $96.78 then this means you would close your trade by selling at $96.60. That would mean you would make a loss of:
Loss = (Final Price - Opening Price) x stake
Loss = ($96.60 - $97.14) x £2 per cent stake
Loss = -$0.54 x £2 per cent stake
Loss = -54¢ x £2 per cent stake
Loss = -£108 loss
Note: Baidu Rolling Daily equities market quoted as of 06-Feb-13.
