How to Spread Bet on Wall Street

How to Spread Bet on Wall Street?

As with a wide range of financial markets, investors can place a spread bet on stock market indices, such as Wall Street, to rise or fall.

Looking at a spread betting site like FinancialSpreads.com, you can see they are valuing the Wall Street Rolling Daily market at 13469.0 - 13470.0. This means that an investor could put a spread bet on the Wall Street index:

Wall Street Trading Example Moving higher than 13470.0, or
Wall Street Spread Trading Example Moving lower than 13469.0

Whilst spread betting on the Wall Street index you trade in £x per point. Therefore, if you chose to risk £4 per point and Wall Street moves 26 points then that would change your profits (or losses) by £104. £4 per point x 26 points = £104.

Rolling Daily Indices Markets

It is important to note that this is a Rolling Daily Market and so unlike a normal futures market, there is no settlement date. If a trade is still open when the markets close at the end of the day, it just rolls over to the next day.

If you do roll over a bet and you are spread betting that the market will:

Wall Street Spread Trading Example Move higher - then you are normally charged a small financing fee, or
Wall Street Spread Trading Example Move lower - then you'll usually receive a small credit to your account

For a fully worked example see Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

Wall Street Rolling Daily - Index Spread Trading Example

If we take the spread of 13469.0 - 13470.0 and make the assumptions:
  • You have analysed the index, and
  • Your analysis suggests the Wall Street index will move higher than 13470.0
Then you could choose to buy at 13470.0 and risk £4 per point.

With such a spread bet you make a profit of £4 for every point that the Wall Street index increases above 13470.0. However, it also means that you will make a loss of £4 for every point that the Wall Street market decreases lower than 13470.0.

Considering this from another angle, if you ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your profit/loss is found by taking the difference between the closing price of the market and the price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that difference in price by your stake.

With this in mind, if after a few trading sessions the US stock market rose then you might consider closing your trade in order to guarantee your profit.

If that happened then the spread might change to 13503.7 - 13504.7. In order to close your trade you would sell at 13503.7. As a result, with the same £4 stake your profit would be:

Profits (or losses) = (Settlement Value - Initial Value) x stake
Profits (or losses) = (13503.7 - 13470.0) x £4 per point stake
Profits (or losses) = 33.7 x £4 per point stake
Profits (or losses) = £134.80 profit

Trading indices is not always simple. With the above, you had bet that the US index would go up. However, the market might fall.

If the Wall Street market began to fall then you might decide to settle/close your position to stop any further losses.

Should the market fall back to 13433.0 - 13434.0 then you would close your trade by selling at 13433.0. Accordingly, your loss would be:

Profits (or losses) = (Settlement Value - Initial Value) x stake
Profits (or losses) = (13433.0 - 13470.0) x £4 per point stake
Profits (or losses) = -37.0 x £4 per point stake
Profits (or losses) = -£148.00 loss

Note - Wall Street Rolling Daily market quoted as of 26-Sep-12.
