How to Spread Bet on US Crude Oil? |
As with a wide variety of global markets, investors can spread bet on futures, such as US Crude Oil, to rise or fall.
If an investor was to look at the FinancialSpreads website, they would see the company pricing the US Crude Oil July Futures market at $92.75 - $92.80. Therefore, an investor could spread trade on US Crude Oil:
Settling higher than $92.80, or
Settling lower than $92.75
On the expiry date for this 'July' market, 15-Jun-12.
Whilst financial spread betting on US Crude Oil you trade in £x per $0.01. As a result, should you decide to invest £5 per $0.01 and US Crude Oil moves $0.28 then that would alter your bottom line by £140. £5 per $0.01 x $0.28 = £140.
US Crude Oil Futures - Commodity Trading Example |
So, if we think about the above spread of $92.75 - $92.80 and make the assumptions that:
then you could buy a spread bet at $92.80 for a stake of £2 per $0.01.
With such a spread bet you win £2 for every $0.01 that US Crude Oil rises above $92.80. However, such a bet also means that you will make a loss of £2 for every $0.01 that the US Crude market falls lower than $92.80.
Considering this from another angle, if you were to ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your profit/loss is found by taking the difference between the closing price of the market and the initial price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that price difference by the stake.
Subsequently, if, on the expiry date, US Crude Oil finished at $93.31, then:
Profit / loss = (Settlement Level - Initial Level) x stake
Profit / loss = ($93.31 - $92.80) x £2 per $0.01
Profit / loss = $0.51 x £2 per $0.01
Profit / loss = £102 profit
Speculating on commodities, whether by spread betting or otherwise, is not simple. In this case, you wanted the commodity to increase. Of course, the futures market can also go down.
If US Crude Oil fell, closing lower at $92.22, you would end up making a loss and losing money on this trade.
Profit / loss = (Settlement Level - Initial Level) x stake
Profit / loss = ($92.22 - $92.80) x £2 per $0.01
Profit / loss = -$0.58 x £2 per $0.01
Profit / loss = -£116 loss
Note: US Crude Oil July Futures commodities market taken as of 21-May-12.
