How to Spread Bet on Dutch Shares - Unilever NA Rolling Daily
Should an investor decide to speculate on European listed companies such as Unilever NA then one solution could be spread betting on the Unilever NA share price.
If you were to look at the FinancialSpreads site, they are currently pricing the Unilever NA Rolling Daily market at €22.58 - €22.64. As a result, you could spread bet on the Unilever NA shares:
- Increasing higher than €22.64, or
- Decreasing lower than €22.58
Whilst spread betting on Dutch shares you trade in £x per cent. As a result, if you choose to have a stake of £6 per cent and the Unilever NA share price moves €0.05 then that would change your bottom line by £30. £6 per cent x €0.05 = £30.

Rolling Daily Shares Markets
One important thing to note is that this is a 'Rolling Daily Market' and therefore it does not have a settlement date. You do not have to close your trade, should it still be open at the end of the trading day, it just rolls over into the next session.
If your bet does roll over and you are speculating on the market to:
- Go up - then you will pay a small overnight financing fee, or
- Go down - then you will often receive a small payment to your account

Unilever NA Rolling Daily - Dutch Equities Spread Betting Example
If you think about the spread of €22.58 - €22.64 and make the assumptions that:
- you have done your analysis of the markets, and
- you feel that the Unilever NA share price will move higher than €22.64
then you may decide that you want to buy at €22.64 and risk, for the sake of argument, £3 per cent.
So, you gain £3 for every cent that the Unilever NA shares increase and move above €22.64. Having said that, you will lose £3 for every cent that the Unilever NA market goes below €22.64.
Looked at another way, if you were to ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your profits (or losses) are found by taking the difference between the settlement price of the market and the price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that difference in price by the stake.
With this in mind, if after a few sessions the stock started to increase then you might want to close your trade to secure your profit.
Taking this a step further, if the market did go up then the spread might move to €23.09 - €23.15. You would close your spread bet by selling at €23.09. So, with the same £3 stake your profit would be:
Profit = (Closing Level - Initial Level) x stake
Profit = (€23.09 - €22.64) x £3 per cent stake
Profit = €0.45 x £3 per cent stake
Profit = 45c x £3 per cent stake
Profit = £135 profit
Financial spread betting on shares can work against you. In this example, you wanted the share price to increase. Naturally, the share price could fall.
If the Unilever NA share price had fallen then you might decide to close/settle your position in order to limit your losses.
So if the market dropped to €22.24 - €22.30 you would settle your trade by selling at €22.24. If so, your loss would be calculated as:
Loss = (Closing Level - Initial Level) x stake
Loss = (€22.24 - €22.64) x £3 per cent stake
Loss = -€0.40 x £3 per cent stake
Loss = -40c x £3 per cent stake
Loss = -£120 loss
