Heading into the close, the FTSE 100 is trading near its highs for the day.
Today has ended up being another volatile session for the FTSE index, although it has stayed broadly within yesterday’s range.
Once again this morning it has been the news and rumour surrounding Europe that has governed sentiment.
Shares were lifted this afternoon by whispers that Greece appears to be close to some sort of agreement on forming a government.
However, the battle-weary traders of the European debt crisis have witnessed too many false dawns already over the last couple of years. The more cynical among them would appear to be happy to sit this one out and see what the next 24 hours bring.
Despite the FTSE's current strength, it feels like the index needs to crack the 5600 mark to show that the current slide is over.
As of yesterday, the FTSE had lost around 5% in the past week. So it's not too surprising that many are staying cautious, and waiting for a more sustainable recovery before committing to a market that still might have the rug pulled out from under it by events on the continent.

Closing comments from Chris Beauchamp, Market Analyst, IG Index:
After continued selling throughout the morning, a number of bargain hunters have popped their heads above the parapet and the FTSE has staged a mini-rally since 15:30.
Before we get too excited, however, we are still looking at another 1% knocked off Britain’s top shares.
Nonetheless, this makes for handsome reading compared to Spain and Italy, where the leading indices are shedding 3% and 2% respectively as the markets have renewed their acquaintance with the timebomb that is the Eurozone crisis.
There are few gainers today, and with a number of heavyweights losing their dividend attractions this has made life doubly difficult for the FTSE 100.
Results from ITV (+1.5%) and Sainsbury's (+1%) have warmed investors to these names today.
The supermarket giant has delivered another blow to the morale of its larger (but currently out-of-favour) rival Tesco, with sales at the top end of expectations. The shaky state of the retail sector was brought into light again, however, as Sainsbury's stated it would moderate UK expansion due to the difficult trading conditions.
