UK Shares: ARM Holdings Sees Positve Results from Apple Business

UK Market Comment, 23 August 2011

Closing comments from Will Hedden, Sales Trader, IG Index:

US markets take the shine off a strong start in Europe for the second day in a row.

Trading in London is subdued after this morning's raft of bargain hunting fizzled out over lunch, but the FTSE 100 looks like it will limp over the line with a small positive finish.

Silver miner Fresnillo (-8.9%) has suffered from profit-taking today after enjoying the benefits of the recent precious metals rally.

At the top end it is interesting to note the performance of ARM Holdings, up 5%. After an incredible rise in 2010 thanks to their technology being prevalent throughout Apple's market-leading product line, the recent bid for Autonomy by HP has put them in the sights of the M&A rumour mill as a fellow strong UK software house.

ARM's chief has said suitors have nothing to gain by coming in for them, but the market is taking no notice of his comments and has lapped up ARM stock today.

US markets are trading higher despite the weak Richmond Fed Factory index reading of -10. Conspiracy theorists have plenty to work with today to keep them occupied till the Fed's Jackson Hole meeting and Ben Bernanke's speech on Friday.

We've had the resignation of the chief of S&P straight on the heels of their US downgrade, and news that Goldman Sachs executives have hired criminal lawyers to help defend their actions in the financial crisis.

Add this to the collapsing case against former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn and you can see how these are helping newswires whip up anticipation for Friday. "Cue the anticlimax" I hear you say, but most are still deciding "QE or not QE?"

UK Market Comment, 22 August 2011

Closing comments from Ben Critchley, Sales Trader, IG Index:

Traders on both sides of the Atlantic are finding a degree of cheer, as the new week gets underway.

Pre-market was looking like a rather different picture, as Friday’s negative leads appeared to be setting the pace, but the reality has been somewhat different.

There has been a spate of equity buying seen amidst rampant speculation that the next round of quantitative easing – QE3 – is about to be declared by the Fed, with this argument finding added weight, given the fact that gold prices continue to forge their way higher regardless.

Quite how long the relief rally will last for remains to be seen – indeed we’re already sitting below session highs – and of course the other risk is that any stimulus from the Fed will again prove to be little more than a quick shot in the arm, leaving the ailing patient craving another in the not too distant future.

Oil has been another area of interest today, with the prospect of Libyan output coming back on stream – combined with the global economic woes – pushing Brent Crude lower once again.

Looking further ahead, the UK and US GDP readings on Friday will both be closely followed, as those with a more optimistic outlook search for any signals that we’re not plunging headlong into another bout of recession.

In summary, however, the market does seem to have already priced in seeing some action from Washington so failure to deliver here will surely serve up more misery.
