Gold almost hit a 28-year high earlier today. The gold spread betting markets are currently being traded at:
Gold Spread Betting Prices
Gold (December): $744.5–745.3
Gold (October): $737.8–738.6
A weak dollar has also been pushing up oil prices and gold prices as the bullion hit $740 an ounce. Looking at the spreads offered above it seems as though the spread betting companies think that gold will push through the $740 marker. As US Interest rates were cut by 0.50% to 4.75% investors have continued to move towards the bullion ‘safe haven’.
Gold Spread Betting - Example
As with many commodities markets, you can spread bet on the future price of gold increasing or decreasing, eg spread betting on the Gold (December) market increasing in value to more than $745.3.
With Gold, you trade in £X per point, where a point is $0.1 of Gold movement. For example if your stake was £10 per point and the Gold moves $0.4 then that would be an £40 difference to your profits.
Let's say you check the quote on a spread betting website and it is currently quoting $744.5 - $745.3. And let’s say you have done your analysis and think that the Gold market should rise above $745.3 by 27-Nov-07 (the expiry date for the Gold December market).
Therefore you buy at $745.3 for a stake of £5 per point.
And so let's say that by the expiry date gold prices closes at $747.5.
If so, your P&L is worked out by taking the difference between the settlement price ie $747.5 and your buy price of $745.3 and then multiplying that by the stake per point of movement.
P&L = (($747.5 - $745.3) / 0.1) x £5 per point stake.
P&L = (2.2 / 0.1) x £5 per point stake.
= £110 profit.
But if the market didn't work as expected and had the Gold (December) value fallen to and settled at $742.5, then you would have made a loss on this market.
Loss = (($742.5 - $745.3) / 0.1) x £5 per point stake.
= (-2.8 / 0.1) x £5 per point stake.
= -£140 loss.
