UK Commodities Trading, 15 July 2011

Do not let the fact that gold’s closing price yesterday was lower than its opening for the first time in eight days distract you from the point that its breaking all time highs.

Investors are persisting to find comfort in the yellow brick’s safe haven status and this is still helping to push the gold spread trading market higher, hence the peak of $1594 being crudely broken.

For the trend to continue you need to see higher peaks and higher troughs, and looking at the herd of bulls steaming forward, it appears that this is a very plausible concept.

At time of writing though, it seems we’re seeing a little breather take place, as the precious metal is trading at $1577.

Brent however has been out of favour with traders and rejected the $120 a barrel level bringing it back down to $115.50 at the time of writing.

The results later could also have a bearing on where crude oil might head to as this rather unforgettable week draws to a close.

UK Commodities Trading, 14 July 2011

The bulls got the boost they wanted to see from Ben Bernanke who hinted that QE3 is becoming more and more likely.

He couldn’t really have been clearer that further stimulus is an option and as a result the bulls snatched the day from the jaws of defeat.

The biggest winner was gold which hit another all time high. It was a one way bet the moment it became apparent and gold bulls will say that it was inevitable. Our spread betting account holders continue to enjoy riding the wave of the yellow metal as it surges higher and the Dollar gets pummelled.

This morning the gold spread betting market is doing very well thank you very much and is being further supported by Moody’s threatening to downgrade US debt.

At $1585, clients are happy to remain long so must be expecting even higher prices to come.

Price Update:
  • Brent Crude Oil / UK Oil (August) closed yesterday at $118.78
  • WTI Nymex / US Oil (August) closed yesterday at $98.05

UK Commodities Trading, 13 July 2011

Gold continues to benefit during these times of turmoil for financial markets and is within sight of its all time high again. Few would bet against it breaching this level and certainly our spread betting account holders remain long the yellow metal.

At the same time silver still can't seem to get back above $37 but the bulls of silver will be encouraged to have seen a strong bounce off the $35 level.

Price Update:
  • Brent Crude Oil / UK Oil (August) closed yesterday at $117.75
  • WTI Nymex / US Oil (August) closed yesterday at $97.43

UK Commodities Trading, 12 July 2011

As investors ponder on the thought of Eurozone debt spreading to Italy and Spain, gold embraced its status as a safety haven asset.

For the last 6 days the yellow metal has consistently closed higher than its opening price, boosting prices up through the moving averages, which in their own show a bullish outlook.

The only issue for the bulls is the ceiling of resistance that has formed around $1558, the high since 2nd May 2011. If today we see another failed attempt, the bears could take over and encourage a corrective dip, which at time of writing is already being prepared for as the precious metal is down at $1546.

Yesterday was no exception to the age old rule that the crude oil spread trading market moves in the opposite direction to the US Dollar.

While Eurozone debt woes weighed on investors’ minds, the stronger Dollar put pressure on the black gold as this product is traded in Dollars globally, meaning any rise in the currency makes crude more expensive.

And to add fuel to the fire, expectations that China’s struggle with inflation could mean that demand will wither away helped the commodity to fall further. At time of writing, the bears are still in control, with Brent futures trading at $115.75, down 148 ticks.

UK Commodities Trading, 11 July 2011

Gold jumped on Friday as investors rushed to the safe haven following NFP. In fact it was such a bad number that it caused serious volatility across all the spread betting markets, something investors have had to get used to throughout 2011.

This morning the yellow metal is at $1546 and is testing the near term resistance at $1550, a break above which should pave the way for a test of $1558 and possibly even $1577. To the downside support is expected at 1532 and 1525.

Price Update:
  • Brent Crude Oil / UK Oil (August) closed last week at $118.33
  • WTI Nymex / US Oil (August) closed last week at $96.20

UK Commodities Trading, 8 July 2011

The gold spread betting market is in profit mode this morning just a few Dollars in the red and at $1527. Back above the 20 and 50 day moving averages bulls are hoping for a re-test of $1550 and then a push on higher.

Nevertheless, the moving averages have made their bearish cross and so there’s a pause for breath as the last time this happened earlier in the year we saw a move lower of some $80.

Gold’s cousin silver seems to be battling around the $36 mark and it too is seeing a little profit taking bring it to $36.15. Our spread betting account holders remain heavily long both metals in the hope for the next leg higher

Crude was the big winner from yesterday’s ADP number. Anything to suggest the world’s biggest economy is in good shape will send the black stuff higher and as a result we saw a $4 spike taking Brent crude oil back above $118 where is remains this morning at $118.20.

The NFP will almost certainly affect crude prices if the figure is a long way off expectations and any bad number could lead to some profit taking.

UK Commodities Trading, 7 July 2011

Gold did well out of Moody's downgrade of Portugal yesterday taking it back to $1533 and that’s where we are this morning. The recent high of $1534 is considered a small resistance level before $1541 and $1549 whilst to the downside $1519 and $1510 are seen as support.

Oil inventories are released later this afternoon and so there might be a bit of volatility for the crude oil markets later on today. Stocks are expected to build further and so this might cap gains for the black stuff but this morning at least Brent is up a tab to $114.30.

UK Commodities Trading, 6 July 2011

There were a number of factors helping gold rebound in yesterday’s session. The Chinese understating local government debt, Moody’s downgrading Portugal’s credit rating to ‘junk’ status, S&P’s warning on Greece and possibly investors realising that the pullback was actually overdone, and maybe a spot of bargain hunting was due.

All of these helped the hedging favourite fire up and gain 17 Dollars to $1512, keeping a sideways short and medium term trend and the rally does seem to be continuing, with gold trading at $1516 at time of writing.

Along with its precious metal companion, silver enjoyed a steep climb, rising $1.21 to $35.31 as investors concerns over contagion in the Eurozone grew.

Additionally, holding a dual role as both a precious and industrial metal, silver received extra support from the US as a positive factory orders report was released.

And it looks like the recent rally might receive even further support from across the Atlantic given that negotiations on the US debt ceiling are still underway.

Price Update:
  • Brent Crude Oil / UK Oil (August) closed yesterday at $113.61
  • WTI Nymex / US Oil (August) closed yesterday at $96.89

UK Commodities Trading, 5 July 2011

Albeit staying below the level of $1500, gold posted an 8 Dollar gain yesterday, up to $1494 as investors hopped, skipped and jumped back into the hedging favourite. This pushed the yellow metal off the 6 week lows seen in the previous session.

We’re where we left off from yesterday at around $1494 and key gold technical analysis levels are seen at 1500/08 to the upside and 1490/78 to the downside.

Yesterday’s session for the black gold was, not all that surprisingly, quiet due to the Independence Day holiday across the Atlantic and a large majority of energy investors taking a peripheral view.

It seems that decision of the IEA to release 60 million barrels of oil, to push crude prices down, has been completely brushed under the carpet. In addition, Moody’s have announced that China’s local government debt may be 3.5 trillion Yuan greater than expected, potentially threatening the credit ratings of the countries lenders.

UK Commodities Trading, 4 July 2011

Will they default or won’t they? This was the day by day fight for the headlines, but the week’s strength took the shine off gold on the commodities markets which felt the brunt of a rise in equity markets as risk appetite returned.

The precious metal finished below the psychologically important level of $1500 last seen on May 17th. All in all the yellow brick ended the day down 14 Dollars at $1486, but at time of writing, it’s trying to claw back some of those losses, up to $1493.

Unlike the equity markets, the energy markets were not rife with positivity. A weaker than expected reading in the Chinese manufacturing numbers, which so far have been the engine driving the world out of recession, ignited new concerns over how firm the current global recovery is.

Not only this, but Europe’s manufacturing data has also sparked worries, adding pressure to the downside of the crude oil spread betting market. The only thing keeping the decline in oil prices to a minimum was the strong EUR/USD pair that acted as a counterbalance.
