How to Spread Bet on TR Property Investment Trust

How to Spread Bet on TR Property Investment Trust?

If you are looking to speculate on UK listed companies like TR Property Investment Trust then one option is to spread bet on the TR Property Investment Trust share price.

Logging into Capital Spreads, you can see they are offering the TR Property Investment Trust Rolling Daily market at 165.4p - 166.6p. Therefore, you can put a spread bet on the TR Property Investment Trust share price:

TR Property Investment Trust Trading Example Moving above 166.6p, or
TR Property Investment Trust Spread Trading Example Moving below 165.4p

Whilst spread trading on FTSE 350 equities you trade in £x per penny. As a result, should you choose to risk £5 per penny and the TR Property Investment Trust share price changes by 28p then that would alter your P&L by £140. £5 per penny x 28p = £140.

Rolling Daily Equities Markets

An important aspect of this Rolling Daily Market is that it does not have a settlement date. As a result, if your trade is still open at the end of the trading day, it will simply roll over to the next trading day.

If your trade does roll over and you are speculating on the market to:

TR Property Investment Trust Spread Trading Example Increase - then you will usually be charged a small overnight financing fee, or
TR Property Investment Trust Spread Trading Example Decrease - then a small payment is usually credited to your account

Our article Rolling Daily Spread Betting goes into more detail about Rolling Daily Markets and includes a fully worked example.

TR Property Investment Trust Rolling Daily - Shares Spread Trading Example

So, if you consider the above spread of 165.4p - 166.6p and make the assumptions:
  • You have done your market research, and
  • Your analysis leads you to think that the TR Property Investment Trust share price looks like it will move higher than 166.6p
Then you may decide that you are going to buy at 166.6p and invest, for the sake of argument, £20 per penny.

This means that you win £20 for every penny that the TR Property Investment Trust shares increase and move above 166.6p. On the other hand, such a bet also means you will lose £20 for every penny that the TR Property Investment Trust market goes below 166.6p.

Looked at another way, if you were to ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your P&L is found by taking the difference between the final price of the market and the initial price you bought the market at. You then multiply that price difference by the stake.

As a result, if after a few trading sessions the stock started to increase then you might think about closing your position in order to guarantee your profit. Taking this a step further, if the market did go up then the spread, determined by the spread betting company, might change to 172.3p - 173.5p. You would settle your position by selling at 172.3p. As a result, with the same £20 stake your profit would come to:

P&L = (Closing Value - Opening Value) x stake
P&L = (172.3p - 166.6p) x £20 per penny stake
P&L = 5.7p x £20 per penny stake
P&L = £114.00 profit

Trading equities, whether by spread trading or otherwise, is not easy. With this example, you had bet that the share price would increase. Naturally, the share price might decrease.

If the TR Property Investment Trust shares had fallen then you might choose to close your spread bet to limit your losses.

So if the market pulled back to 161.9p - 163.1p you would settle/close your trade by selling at 161.9p. That would mean you would lose:

P&L = (Closing Value - Opening Value) x stake
P&L = (161.9p - 166.6p) x £20 per penny stake
P&L = -4.7p x £20 per penny stake
P&L = -£94.00 loss

Note: TR Property Investment Trust Rolling Daily equities market correct as of 31-Oct-12.
