UK Market Comment, 19 March 2012
Closing comments from Yusuf Heusen, Sales Trader, IG Index:
Heading into the close, the FTSE is slightly weaker on the day so far.
With no major corporate or economic news on the calendar, it has been a fairly uninspiring start to the week.
Blue-chips came under pressure first thing, but as we have seen in recent months, this was viewed by many as just an opportunity to buy in at some slightly bargain prices.
It is a case of same old same old when it comes to stock markets at the moment. There seems to be very little day to day volatility but the bias remains to the upside, so we could well see a slow grind that finally breaches the 6000 level on the FSTE over the next few days.
US markets are broadly similar; Apple’s announcement that it will start paying a dividend caused a flurry of excitement.
While all global stock markets remain within their uptrends, it does appear that the technology sector is attracting the most attention at the moment.

UK Market Comment, 16 March 2012
Closing comments from Chris Beauchamp, Market Analyst, IG Index:
Heading into the close, the FTSE appears set to finish the day around the levels it started, some 20 points higher.
It has been an undeniably quiet week for markets, as a lack of really weighty news keeps traders in an uncomfortable limbo.
Stock market indices still sit near their record highs, and indeed continue to record small-scale gains, but enthusiasm is not exactly widespread.
US data this afternoon failed to live up to expectations, providing an excuse to end the week on a quiet note, and investors continue to debate where the next catalyst, whether positive or negative, will emerge.
Until such a catalyst emerges, the scene looks set for a continuation next week of the quiet trading that has remained the norm for most of March.
Next week provides a reasonable slew of data that might help to lift markets.
US housing data, Eurozone PMI figures and American unemployment figures might help to reassure investors that the global economy remains generally healthy.
However, we have survived a whole week without a major Eurozone crisis, and investors’ thoughts will inevitably turn to the struggling economies of Spain and Portugal.
Everyone knows that this period of calm cannot last for ever.
