How to Spread Bet on Indices - Swiss 30 Futures
As with a wide variety of global markets, an investor can spread bet on stock market indices, like the Swiss 30, to go up or down.
If an investor was to look at the Paddypowertrader site, they are showing the Swiss 30 June Futures market at 6534 - 6538. This means you could spread trade on the Swiss 30 index:
- Closing higher than 6538, or
- Closing lower than 6534
On the expiry date for this 'June' market, 16-Jun-11.
Whilst financial spread trading on the Swiss 30 index you trade in £x per point. So, if you chose to risk £4 per point and the Swiss 30 moves 5 points then that would make a difference to your profits (or losses) of £20. £4 per point x 5 points = £20.

Swiss 30 Futures Spread Trading Example
So, if we think about the above spread of 6534 - 6538 and assume:
- you have completed your analysis, and
- you feel that the Swiss 30 index will close above 6538 by 16-Jun-11
then you might decide to buy a spread bet at 6538 for a stake of, for example, £2 per point.
Therefore, you win £2 for every point that the Swiss 30 index moves higher than 6538. Having said that, it also means that you will make a loss of £2 for every point that the Swiss 30 market goes below 6538.
Thinking of this in a slightly different way, should you buy a spread bet then your profits (or losses) are worked out by taking the difference between the settlement price of the market and the initial price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that difference in price by the stake.
Therefore, if, on the closing date, the Swiss 30 finished at 6590, then:
Profit / loss = (Final Price - Initial Price) x stake
Profit / loss = (6590 - 6538) x £2 per point stake
Profit / loss = 52 x £2 per point stake
Profit / loss = £104 profit
Speculating on stock market indices can work against you. With this example, you wanted the index to increase. Of course, the index can also go down.
If the Swiss 30 had fallen, closing lower at 6479, you would end up making a loss.
Profit / loss = (Final Price - Initial Price) x stake
Profit / loss = (6479 - 6538) x £2 per point stake
Profit / loss = -59 x £2 per point stake
Profit / loss = -£118 loss
