How to Spread Bet on French Shares - Suez Environnement Rolling Daily

Should an investor decide to invest in European companies such as Suez Environnement then one option could be to spread bet on the Suez Environnement share price.

If you were to look at the Capitalspreads spread trading website, they are currently valuing the Suez Environnement Rolling Daily market at €13.95 - €14.00. As a result, an investor can spread bet on the Suez Environnement shares:
  • Moving above €14.00, or
  • Moving below €13.95
When spread trading on French shares you trade in £x per cent. So, if you decide to risk £6 per cent and the Suez Environnement share price moves €0.05 then that would be a difference to your P&L of £30. £6 per cent x €0.05 = £30.

Note that you can also trade this market in Euros or Dollars, e.g. €x per cent.

Rolling Daily Equities Markets

One thing to note is that this is a Rolling Daily Market which means that there is no set settlement date for this market. If a trade is still open when the markets close at the end of the day, it will simply roll over to the next trading day.

If you do let your trade roll over into the next day and are spread betting on the market to:
  • Go up - then you will be charged a small overnight financing fee, or
  • Go down - then a small payment is often credited to your account
For a fully worked example see Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

Suez Environnement Rolling Daily - French Shares Spread Trading Example

So, if we consider the above spread of €13.95 - €14.00 and make the assumptions that:
  • you have done your analysis, and
  • it leads you to think that the Suez Environnement share price is likely to go higher than €14.00
then you might buy a spread bet at €14.00 and risk £3 per cent.

So, you gain £3 for every cent that the Suez Environnement shares increase and move above €14.00. On the other hand, such a bet also means you will make a loss of £3 for every cent that the Suez Environnement market falls below €14.00.

Put another way, should you ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your profits (or losses) are worked out by taking the difference between the final price of the market and the initial price you bought the market at. You then multiply that price difference by your stake.

Therefore, if after a few hours the shares started to increase then you might want to close your position in order to secure your profit. As an example, if the market increased then the spread, determined by the spread betting company, could be adjusted to €14.32 - €14.37. To settle/close your trade you would sell at €14.32. Accordingly, with the same £3 stake:

Profit = (Settlement Level - Opening Level) x stake
Profit = (€14.32 - €14.00) x £3 per cent stake
Profit = €0.32 x £3 per cent stake
Profit = 32c x £3 per cent stake
Profit = £96 profit

Speculating on equities, by spread trading or otherwise, may not go to plan. With this example, you wanted the share price to increase. Of course, the share price could decrease.

If the Suez Environnement stock weakened, against your expectations, then you could close your trade in order to restrict your losses.

If the market dropped to €13.72 - €13.77 then this means you would settle your trade by selling at €13.72. As a result, your loss would be:

Loss = (Settlement Level - Opening Level) x stake
Loss = (€13.72 - €14.00) x £3 per cent stake
Loss = -€0.28 x £3 per cent stake
Loss = -28c x £3 per cent stake
Loss = -£84 loss

Note - Suez Environnement Rolling Daily equities market taken as of 18-Nov-10.
