UK Market Comment, 19 July 2012
Closing comments from Rupert Osborne, Futures Dealer, IG Index:
Although the gains this afternoon aren't exactly impressive, they are a significant improvement on the morning, with the FTSE up 20 points heading into the close.
US earnings season continues to provide reason for hope, with tech stocks doing especially well after IBM's earnings last night, and with Google and Microsoft to follow after the close tonight there remains scope for further good news.
Markets have shrugged off the worrying Spanish bond auction from this morning, but investors should not become too blasé about elevated yields for Italy and Spain.
These countries could easily spoil the party, and the continuing drop in yields for nations such as France and Germany shows that nervousness hasn't gone away entirely.
However, for now the Eurozone seems content to remain quiet, providing a welcome degree of relief for embattled markets.
Weaker US data has meant that the Dow is struggling to make headway this afternoon, since while the news was poorer, it wasn't so bad as to add weight to the view that QE3 would arrive soon to make everything better.
Ben Bernanke may have given away little in his testimony yesterday. However, the hope of more easing is probably enough, combined with reasonable earnings, to keep this current upward move going for a while yet, so long as nothing disastrous emerges from Europe.

UK Market Comment, 18 July 2012
Closing comments from Will Hedden, Sales Trader, IG Index:
As home-time approaches, the FTSE 100 has eked out an afternoon gain of 40 points and stands around 5670.
It is hard to get over excited about a rally such as today's. Corporate news is thin on the ground and summer feels like it has well and truly set in, at least in market terms.
Many will be happy to bank today's gains, with this 5600-5700 range proving happy hunting ground for technical traders willing to bounce around.
A quiet week for Europe is likely to keep us range bound, although the IMF have done their best to spice things up with nervous comments on Italy among a number of other things.
Across the pond and again traders will pay, arguably too much, attention to Ben Bernanke and his second day of talking on Capitol Hill.
Markets there may be due for another rollercoaster session as the tech sector remains in focus.
Intel have turned positive, having reported last night, and we are awaiting results from IBM this evening.
With calmer waters in Europe this week it seems that looking westward is the only option for market watchers seeking direction.
