Spread Trading Stock Market Review, 4 November 2011

As the Greek Prime Minister digs his own political grave, the Eurozone saga continues to overshadow the G20 meeting in France.

As the story continues it becomes more and more interesting with the prospect of the drama intensifying with crucial votes ahead, one of the major ones being Italy.

Berlusconi is hanging onto power by the skin of his teeth, after defection after defection from his coalition, and he faces his own critical vote next Tuesday when he tries to ratify his latest budget proposals.

That will be interesting when it comes to it and all eyes will be on the Italian politicians. This is why the drama has only just begun, with an unwritten script that no single person could ever have dreamt up.

If the vote does go against Berlusconi then there’s no guarantee he’ll step down, judging by the way he’s managed to stay in office up to now.

As the meetings go on at the G20, the market continues to focus on what’s happening in Europe. However, today at least gives us the chance to look at something different, with the US Non Farm Payroll being released at lunchtime today.

It’s an hour earlier than normal this week due to changing clocks and the bottom line figure is expected to come in at around 100k.

This still isn’t enough to put a dent in the US unemployment rate but is job creation nonetheless.

The NFP figure has been almost as volatile as the indices spread betting markets themselves coming in at 0 one month, way below expectations and then way above expectations the next month.

So far this week we have seen a better than expected ADP employment number and yesterday’s initial jobless claims also saw an improvement, so there’s a chance that today’s figure might come out above three figures.

The unemployment rate meanwhile is expected to remain at 9.1%, a thorn in the side of President Obama.

Financial spread betting markets are sanguine this morning from a trading range point of view but in the black as investors have weathered the political unravelling of the past few days remarkably well.

The FTSE 100 is up by 10 or so points at the time of writing, around 5560 and for now that important support area around 5400 remains in tact.

Spread Trading Stock Market Review, 3 November 2011

The drama continues as now the Greek Prime minister is being pressured to turn his referendum into a yes or no vote on membership of the euro as opposed to just the latest bailout.

These political games are costing the Eurozone dear as once again we see the bond yields rise on Italian 10 year debt.

Financial spread betting investors are really starting to lose faith in the whole EU project and the cracks are beginning to show as Italy’s latest bond auction was not a successful one.

In addition, demand for EFSF bonds has fallen flat on its face, the lukewarm response to the EU summit plans from China and Japan are a worry and the bond yields for the danger zone states carry on higher.

Greece had its latest tranche of bailout funds taken away from it ahead of the referendum, which is expected early next month. This is cutting it fine for the country which will default then if it doesn’t get it.

The timing is becoming a real issue now as the market is becoming more and more reluctant to lend to the likes of Italy and Spain which are swiftly becoming the major issues for the Eurozone.

So it’ll be touch and go as to whether Greece defaults or not and if the worst case scenario does happen then that’s when things will really start to get ugly.

A non-voluntary default will trigger CDSs for which the black hole is impossible to know how deep it goes, particularly if this were to trigger the contagion that everyone fears so much. This could trigger a Lehman situation on a sovereign scale.

Unsurprisingly the FTSE 100 spread betting market is a little lower this morning, wiping out its gains from yesterday as investors closely watch the G20 meeting get underway.

Spread Trading Stock Market Review, 2 November 2011

After the selling of yesterday, the FTSE is a little higher this morning taking us back to the mid 5400 area.

At the time of writing it is bang on 5450 and this 5400 area is where the index found it so hard to break through to the upside throughout August and September.

The theory goes that past resistance becomes future support and so buyers are being attracted back, tentatively expecting 5400 to hold firm. Having said that, I suspect many will be keeping a close guaranteed stop loss below this level in case more crashing ensues.

Spread Trading Stock Market Review, 1 November 2011

The FTSE 100 has started the day on the back foot after some weak manufacturing data was released from China.

This hasn’t been complimented by the OECD’s gloomy outlook on growth in the Eurozone after they said they expect the odd little dip back into recession over the next year although an “official” one should be avoided.

This morning we also get the release of the first reading of Q3 GDP from the UK. Whilst we’re not expecting any negative growth, we’re not going to see any fireworks either although the figure might possibly come in better than market consensus.

All in all though it means that the UK economy is flat lining, something the coalition government will be blamed for on government cuts, which are still nowhere near as bad as everyone is hyping them up to be.

The problem of no growth is that the deficit reduction plans are not going to hit their targets and that could make bond markets think again, which up until now have given us the benefit of the doubt.

At the same time as the GDP figure, we get UK manufacturing PMI which is expected to just about remain above the 50.0 mark indicating expansion. Then later on it’s the US’s turn to paint their picture for manufacturing.

Later this evening Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke will give a press conference and this will be closely watched to see just how far he’ll go in lowering his growth forecasts and increasing unemployment predictions.

Spread Trading Stock Market Review, 31 October 2011

The FTSE spread trading market seems to have given up the ghost on trying to record its second best monthly gain on record as the euphoria from last week’s EU summit rubs off.

European leaders and officials have been going cap in hand to Asia hoping that they will write us a blank cheque and we’ll give them a big IOU in return. However, for some reason, the likes of China and Japan seem reluctant to show their support.

Hmm, I wonder why when you see the damage that the crisis has done to confidence so far, causing the threat of a double dip recession in Europe to become more real than ever. On top of this of course, investors in Greek debt have had their investments chopped in half.

Without any details of how the EFSF will be leveraged to one trillion euros, investors have been left having to wave their fingers in the air as to how a crucial part of the plan will be achieved.

Details should be forthcoming at the end of this week at the G20 meeting on Thursday and Friday, yet another photograph opportunity, but as we’ve seen all too often before these summits are usually thin in this area.

Selling in metals has led to selling pressure on mining stocks today which saw big gains last week.

They are very much on the back foot today and it’s the defensives that are making ground.

As October comes to an end it will be remembered once more for it volatility, but this time for the tremendous gains in the indices spread betting markets.

With November and the end of 2011 around the corner, bulls who have missed out on much of this bounce so far will be asking whether it’s worth buying at these levels. This will be the case even if November and December are historically very bullish months for stock markets.

The rally has taken the daily chart back to the 200 day moving average which is where we’ve seen this halt in the buying.

If we are indeed in a bear market then often we see bounces take us to test this level before giving up and heading back down again.

Considering the speed with which we’ve seen the indices get back to these levels it’s hard to think that we could test the lows around 4800 again this year. However, markets tend to fall quicker than they rise so it can’t be ruled out.

Spread Trading Stock Market Review, 28 October 2011

There’s been something of a buying frenzy on the indices spread betting markets in recent days.

It hasn’t been solely down to optimism in the run up to the EU summit and the continuation of that following Wednesday’s negotiations, but corporate earnings have been relatively strong on the whole.

This morning the UK 100 index is adding to the gains of recent days and is well on track to record its second best monthly gain ever.

A remarkable feat when you consider that at the beginning of October there was a feeling that we might see yet another typical mass sell off as we have so often in the past.

The first few days started very nervously as the UK 100 fell 3.5%, so if we hadn’t seen that then we’d probably be saying we’re on the verge of recoding the best monthly gain in the index’s history.

This morning the index is happily drifting higher trading at 5744 as the appetite for risk remains insatiable.

Spread Trading Stock Market Review, 27 October 2011

So has the European sovereign debt crisis been averted? That question will be asked again in two or three year’s time when Spain and Italy have to roll over their debts.

Vast sums of money have been lent to them to the tune of nearly €1 trillion to Italy and half that for Spain. Throw into the mix the already bailed out PIIGS and any other possible future bailouts and the leverage of the existing EFSF to €1 trillion looks a little in significant.

The announcements yesterday were nothing more than that with the only thing that was agreed being the recapitalisation of Europe’s banks to the tune of just over €100 billion. At least our own banks come away from this with a bill of clean health as they won’t need to partake.

Spread betting investors are still seeing lots of loose ends that need tying up and, even once they are, there’s still no guarantee that this will have resolved the crisis altogether.

If the heavily indebted European nations are still uncompetitive and struggling to grow in a couple of year’s time, even sooner perhaps, then they will be engulfed by their debts and we’ll be back to square one again. This time however it will probably be either Spain or Italy that will be the defaulting nations.

Growth is going to be the key to helping us get out of this mess. As we should have learnt by now, growth is not sustainable or even viable by simply borrowing more.

Growth starts with confidence so at least yesterday’s talk might create some clear blue water so we now know where we all stand, even if the finer details still need to emerge.

But that confidence seems a long way from coming to the UK’s shores.

If you were to open the papers today, all you would see is negative headline after negative headline. Claims that the European deal is a fudge and not enough, job losses across all sectors and falling output in our factories.

Now that much of the European issue is out of the way, at least for the next year or so, we the indices spread betting can markets focus on other things. That means back to the same old sluggish UK economy story, protests and yes, ‘let’s blame it on the government cuts’.

GDP numbers from the US will be closely watched today with a jump expected from 1.30% last quarter to 2.40% so at least there’s a bit of good news across the pond. We also get the weekly jobless claims and some pending home sales data which might lead to a little movement in US indices later.

Spread Trading Stock Market Review, 26 October 2011

This morning, the UK 100 is continuing to hold above the 5500 level despite the weakness seen on the US markets last night.

We are seeing a certain amount of selling from our spread betting clients but the jury still seems to be out ahead of the outcome of today’s summit. The big question for today is whether the summit will provide the catalyst for the next major move to the downside.

So as we await the outcome of the meeting, we can also check up on corporate earnings which remain in rather good shape on the whole.

From an economic data point of view it's another day that is dominated with US releases as we get durable goods and new home sales around lunch time London time.

Spread Trading Stock Market Review, 25 October 2011

We had expected to see the FTSE have a bit of profit taking this morning and, whilst the index did open slightly lower, it has been quick to bounce back to where it left off last night.

Oil majors are assisting the buyers following better than expected earnings from BG and BP and for once it would seem that investors are focusing on decent corporate news.

But of course the market isn’t really as the overriding issue remains how much of a write down private investors will accept on their Greek debts.

The losses incurred amount to billions and the resultant recapitalisation of banks required is going to make the recent bout of austerity measures announced across Europe look like a bit of a picnic in the park.

Lending will likely get frostier and frostier as investors ask “if I’m going to lend to Greece and lose over half my investment then why should I lend to Spain or Italy?”

As the battles and discussions go on behind the scenes, markets remain optimistic that the plans will be enough to prevent contagion and an EU catastrophe.

The FTSE’s two and a half month high has been attracting spread betting account holders to sell into the index as they remain doubtful of a distinct and lasting resolution.

Rather surprisingly some German consumer confidence data released today came in better than expected which is encouraging for Europe’s biggest economy.

This indicates that the European sovereign debt crisis doesn’t seem to be affecting them so much and certainly their buoyant labour market isn’t depressing German consumers like rising unemployment in the UK is.

Later on today we see US consumer confidence which could prove a bit of a market mover. Confidence is expected to rise a little but remains at low levels as the outlook for business conditions continues to struggle.

Spread Trading Stock Market Review, 24 October 2011

The markets remain hopeful that Wednesday will bring the answers to all our prayers as investors give the European politicians the benefit of the doubt.

Headlines over the coming days will be filled with little other than the discussions and for now the FTSE is content hovering around the 5500 level.

We were calling the index to open up higher around 5540 but by the time we came to commence trading some 30 points had been knocked off our call.

In the near term, the index spread trading market is struggling to get above and beyond the highs it formed exactly a week ago. Fears of a mini double top formation on the hourly chart are encouraging some of our spread betting account holders to short the index.

PMI surveys from Germany and the EU will be keenly watched today, in particular the German ones which are expected to show manufacturing and services have just dipped below the 50.0 level which suggests contraction.
