Review 10 Dec 07

There were a variety of reactions to last week's interest rate cut in the UK; the Independent reported on City expectations of a 10% fall in house prices next year, whilst the Sunday Times quotes the latest research from Citigroup to forecast the slowest growth in consumer spending since 1992. The Sunday Telegraph seeks to redress the balance, reminding us that inflation (already above its central target) is a bigger risk than a recession.

The Sunday Business Post produced a scathing review of last Wednesday's Irish Budget suggesting that the speech was more about promoting the interests of Brian Cowen than the Irish economy.

Sellers of Moss Bros, after last week’s profit warning, won’t be rejoicing at the Sunday Times’ report that Icelandic investment group Baugur is preparing a £40 million takeover of the group.

The Scotland on Sunday expects HBOS (referred to as the Bank of Scotland) to please analysts with lower sub-prime write downs than previously expected. But it quotes analysts as being more cautious over the bank's exposure to commercial property.

According to the Sunday Times the saga of EMAP's break-up is set to continue. Shareholders are considering voting against the disposal of the magazine and radio divisions to Germany's Bauer as a protest against the failure to find buyers for the exhibitions and information division.
