Spread Betting Stock Market Trading, 3 June 2011
The losses are mounting up for equity markets as nervousness ahead of today’s key Non Farm Payroll figure sets in.
US markets remained under pressure last night as momentum for the bulls looks to be drying up. But then again, just when we were thinking that earlier in May, as the FTSE drifted towards the 5800 level, the index bounced.
From a technical point of view it’s difficult to get excited about this bull market any more since UK shares have largely been range trading throughout the year, drifting sideways between highs and lows.
Then you look at the fundamentals and you’re thrown a barrage of contradictory reasons for buying stocks.
Equities on the whole still look good value and are yielding some decent returns, yields that continue to rise, but downward trending economic data and a never ending debt crisis in Europe are hampering progress for the market.
So the FTSE is not in the best of shape this morning but just on the side of the angels. On the other hand, second tier London stocks continue to knock on their highs and have largely ignored the UK benchmark index’s malaise.
The FTSE 250 is a mere 1.5% off its all time highs, making a mockery of its bigger brother which is still a whopping 18% off its all time highs.
Compare that to the Dow and DAX 30, which are 16% and 14% off their highs respectively, and you’d be forgiven for thinking that FTSE 100 stocks are undervalued.
At the time of writing we’re at 5860 so key near term support and resistance levels remain at 5850 and 5825 to the downside and 5970-6000 to the upside.
So for now the FTSE is just about holding onto this near term support area with a little help from slightly better than expected services PMI numbers from Germany and the EU.

This morning the FTSE is at 5865 after adding to its losses from yesterday with further declines today.
Current near term levels to watch are at 5850 and 5825 to the downside and 5970-6000 to the upside.
The UK release is construction PMI data this morning, which very optimistically is expected to show a rise. However, judging by the way other PMIs have gone this week it would come as a surprise to see it go higher.
Then later on the weekly jobless claims from the US are released which are also expected to head higher and that doesn’t come as too much of a surprise when you consider the terrible ADP employment figure yesterday.

Once again the bounce we saw on the shares spread betting markets yesterday fizzled out and investors simply can’t seem to push us meaningfully higher.
The 6000-15 area was seen as an important near term resistance level as it was where the FTSE had previously failed in the middle of May and it kept the bulls at bay.
This morning the market cannot make its mind up following a mixed performance from US markets that at one point looked like they would post gains of around half of what they eventually did.
The data from the US yesterday was poor to say the least. Housing data showed a double dip decline in prices, with house prices in the US retreating back below their low in 2009.
In addition, consumer confidence fell in May to 60.8 from 66 last month and the Chicago Purchasing Managers Index declined which could mean that recovery is coming to a standstill.
All these are a toxic recipe on the macro economic front, particularly when you have an economy that is so reliant on consumers. For the US markets to recover from their lows and end up near their highs last night was quite an achievement but baffling at the same time.
This morning the European markets have not followed through with this strength and are proving a very mixed bag.
The failure to push on through is a concern for the bulls, in particular the FTSE which is being a real laggard when compared to the Dax or Dow.
Bulls will argue that the long term uptrend remains very much in tact, whereas bear will argue that the rally is running out of steam and has been for most of the year.
Constant failures at the highs and recent lower highs and lower lows are warning signs that a further correction might be imminent.
For the FTSE in the near term the 6000-15 area, where we have failed twice now, is a crucial near term resistance level, with 6035-50 above here. So there are a few hurdles to overcome before the index can have its third crack at taking out 6100 this year.

So another little bounce on the open as investors price in the full expectation of another bailout for Greece next month.
There’s little chance that they’ll be able to repay their bond holders come mid-July where a default was inevitable and so now they know further aid is in the pipeline.
The concern is that the money will just be frittered away and over the extended weekend Greece’s opposition party rejected the Prime Minister’s austerity package. This is the major problem and if Germany keeps throwing good money after bad, there’s little incentive for the Greeks to eradicate the debt burden.
The FTSE put on some 40 points overnight as Asian markets and European futures rallied on the prospect of a second bailout. Last night we were calling the market to open flat, but then we crept higher as the night went on.
Some 40 points to the good so far this morning, this rally is being sustained around 5980 and we’re not far off testing 6000 again.
It seems a far cry from a week ago when we were breaking the support levels around 5800 as now the index broken upwards through the downward trend line formed since the beginning of May.
Interestingly it’s not the miners that are basking in this rally but a much it’s more of a broader based rise.
The big question is whether the FTSE can sustain the upward momentum and get above and beyond the year’s highs. Each rally up to now has been short lived and investor appetite seems to almost have dried up.
Having recently spoken to a couple of friends in the corporate finance sector it seems that many fund managers are very cautious about where to invest and, when they wouldn’t normally hesitate to invest in a new IPO, they’re being very hesitant.
This looks to be a similar case for the broader financial spread betting market where there’s a lot of cash swimming around without a home to go to, but investors remain unwilling to commit more to equities.
The US also enjoyed an extended weekend which means they were out of action yesterday as well.
Recently the US markets have really dictated the passage of play, regularly influencing how European indices perform in their afternoon sessions. It will be interesting to see if the Dow and S&P join the party or reverse the gain made so far.
At the time of writing we’re calling the Dow to open up 100 points at 12541 and the S&P up 12 at 1343.
Economic data is sparse throughout the week until we get to Friday’s Non Farm Payroll. So until then eyes will remain on the developments evolving from the Eurozone.

Ever since the falls on Monday the markets have slowly tried to claw their way back as the battle between the bulls and the bears rages on.
For the whole year we've drifted sideways and not even a break to the upside by the Dax and US indices has been enough for the rally to push on through.
Too much has prevented the rally from running away from itself and seeded too much doubt in the minds of investors who remain unwilling to expose themselves further to the equity market.
On the whole the sideways move can be considered relatively healthy in the respect that we are not getting ahead of ourselves and creating the next equity market bubble, although this argument could be said of commodity markets.
So far there's little to suggest that the recent retracement is the end of this bull run but it's still hard to see the market breaking out in either direction for the time being.
Having said that, a downside move does look more likely simply from a technical point of view rather than a fundamental one and even the fundamentals are not exactly sound.
US GDP numbers failed to impress yesterday and so the US stocks pulled back a little.
For the S&P 500 a crucial break below the 1319 level was seen as a very bearish move for many technical analysts and the index continues to hover around this level. If we get below 1300 then the alarm bells will really start to ring.
Overall the trend remains bullish for the majority of global indices, but that doesn't mean they aren't subject to the odd bit of weakness.
For the FTSE spread betting market, it seems to be taking things in its stride this morning, opening back above the 5900 level at 5935. There's a feeling that today might be very quiet ahead of the extended bank holiday weekend.
Bulls will be hoping for a close above 5900 but if this isn't achieved at least for the index to hold onto support levels seen at 5825 and 5790. Bears will be expecting a close below the 5850 region and hoping for the resistance levels at 5920/5970 to keep the pressure to the downside.

Another day sees another claw back of Monday's big losses. It's incredible to see the market at its lows doing exactly the reverse to what it has been doing at its highs by rejecting them.
Throughout 2011 any strength in the FTSE taking it towards its highs has been met with selling and any weakness taking it towards its lows has been met with buying.
Apart from the sharp falls and rebound following the Japanese earthquake the range for the FTSE 100 has been a meagre 300 points. Basically, rather boring.
So where do we go from here? Will we be taken back to 6100 only to reject it again or will we drift back towards 5800. My guess is that we'll continue to oscillate within this range and it's easy to see why.
The index spread trading market has gone sideways throughout the year, the bulls can't push us to new highs and the bears don't have enough ammo to drive us lower.
The stalemate has arisen because, on the one hand, valuations have largely remained the same for about 6 months, making stocks attractive to those investors who saw them attractive at the beginning of the year.
But at the same time there are serious concerns about the stalling global economy and European sovereign debt which cast enough doubt in investors’ minds that there's not much room left to the upside.
This morning the FTSE 100 shares are drifting a little higher on the back of the US strength last night, trading at 5885 at the time of writing.

The market unconvincingly clawed back some of Monday's losses but overnight we saw weaker US and Asian sessions which is following into European indices this morning.
The FTSE is now knocking on the door of 5800 marking fresh new lows and commodities are under some serious selling pressure.
Not wanting to sound like a broken record, but the selling pressure is being put down to worries over Greece. Many people are asking how such a small country can cause so much concern for global financial spread betting markets.
The simple answer is that a default by Greece on repaying its debt could have shock waves through the banking sector and ultimately lead to another banking crisis and defaults by other countries. This is a snowball effect that everyone is desperate to avoid so soon after the last banking crisis only couple of years ago.
One of the highlights today on the economic data front is the UK GDP numbers. This is the 2nd release for Q1 which came in lower than expected at 0.5%, narrowly avoiding a double dip recession.
However, the 0.5% is nowhere near the expectations that the market was hoping for when the first reading was released and it just confirms the fragile state of the UK economy, which is yet to go through the bulk of the government spending cuts.
Recent employment data has been strong and indicates that the private sector is picking up the slack from the loss in government jobs. The real test however is whether this can be sustained as the cuts bite, particularly when so many surveys and economic data releases are starting to suggest that the recovery is slowing down.

So a little bounce off yesterday’s lows and those financial spread betting clients who bought the FTSE yesterday and last night are seeing early rewards, but the question is whether this morning’s little rally can be sustained.
The news flow is still hardly conducive to buying equities, with downgrades to sovereign debt across Europe and now the more unexpected countries like Belgium and Italy are being targeted by ratings agencies.
Even the UK is not immune, receiving a downgrade from the Chinese rating agency Dagong overnight as they cut from AA- to A+ and even slapped a negative outlook on too.
The more well known agencies will be taking note and there’s every chance that we could see our precious triple A rating at Moody’s come under scrutiny.
For all the action that the coalition is seemed to be taking on government expenditure, in the grand scheme of things it’s a drop in the ocean compared to our massive mountain of debt and large budget deficit.
This morning sees the release of the UK’s public sector net borrowing which is expected to see how things are looking for the start of the new fiscal year. Expectations are for a reduction in the PSNB with the help of a rise in tax receipts more than anything else.
The equity story of the day is High Street bellwether Marks and Spencer who have reported some good numbers, with profit coming in slightly higher than expected.
Even so M&S shares are being a little unfairly shunned by investors and are lower this morning. The £4 mark for M&S’s shares looks too much for the stock, following some very good strength that it’s seen since the beginning of April.
The share price has seen its ups and downs in the past few years with the Philip Green bid back in 2004 and then subsequently it rocketed to 750p before being smashed back down to 200p in 2008.
New CEO Marc Bolland has made a number of managerial changes in order to put M&S back on the right track and so we may not see the returns from those changes for a while. In addition, later this year expectations are for the structural changes to be well underway and really lift the bottom line.
Spread Betting Stock Market Trading, 23 May 2011
The financial spread betting markets are in bad shape this morning and for the FTSE the crucial support level of 5850 is being tested.
Not only does this meet with the 200 day moving average, but we’ve been below the 20 and 50 day moving averages for the last few sessions and now they have crossed which is a bearish signal.
Things look weak technically and fundamentally as investors focus on the Greek issue, so all eyes will be on a break and close below the 5850 level which could lead to further selling pressure.
Since the recent failure to take out the 2011 highs around 6100 the FTSE 100 has made two attempts at getting back up there but the lack of momentum has formed two lower highs, another classic bearish signal.
Any move to the downside will lead to a lower low and for those who follow Dow Theory, that’s a down trend.
