As we start the second half of the year we look back on the first half and wonder how, after all that’s happened, the FTSE 100 can be in exactly the same position as where is started off 2011.
The first half of the year can be highlighted by the FTSE’s repeated failures to break above the 6100 level and the same time inability to break below support levels around 5650.
The index has basically drifted sideways providing almost perfect trading conditions for ultra short term traders who’ve spent most of the year selling the highs and buying the lows, with many not doing too badly out of it either.
Of course from a geopolitical level, tensions in the Middle East and the Eurozone debt crisis have dominated headlines and clouded investor’s ability to make rational investment decisions.
Now that the Greeks have accepted austerity measures the financial spread betting markets can focus on other areas as the second half gets underway. To start with they’ll be preoccupied with sovereign debt issues across the pond where the US continues to fail to agree on their debt ceiling.
On top of this, eyes will also remain on the Middle East where tensions in Syria continue to grow.
The big issue though remains the overall picture for the global economy and what’s happening with China. Overnight a Chinese PMI number fell to its lowest level of 11 months and so European markets are just taking things in their stride this morning waiting for further direction from other economic data.
So the FTSE is pretty much where it left off last night although just in the red around 5940. Our spread betting account holders have been selling into the recent strength expecting momentum to run out of steam and if past performance is anything to go by these sellers might be right. However, there is a feeling that the bulls will want to see another test of 6000 again soon.
For second tier equities in the UK, the FTSE 250 has seen the recent rally bring it almost back to 2011 highs. This in turn means that we are not too far off its all time high around 12200, with the index trading at 11920 this morning.

So, first vote passed and investors who had bought back into equities on Monday and Tuesday were rubbing their hands with glee as yesterday saw the FTSE put on another 1.5%.
The risky assets were in demand with miners in particular proving very popular as they have seen substantial weakness in recent weeks.
The big question is though, has the recent bounce off the lows been just a bear squeeze or an indication of higher prices to come?
For some at least the losses in the shares spread betting markets up to now have presented a buying opportunity. And who can blame the bulls when equities on the whole, OK so we strip banks out, still look attractive from a valuation and yield perspective.
However, it feels like bears are still ready to pounce if something slips up as this little rally from the lows is in the face of severe headwinds.
All this bullishness seems too good to be true and is at a time when things are still on a knife edge as regards global growth and the Eurozone debt crisis.
Italy for example saw a poor bond auction on Tuesday and the yield on their government 10 year bonds is hovering just below the 5% mark having spiked above there on Monday, for the second time.
The 5% mark is considered the point of no return in terms of requiring a bailout, so there's still a lot of nervousness.
We are now knocking on the door of the near term resistance levels at 5880/5900 with the FTSE bang on 5880 this morning. But is this all a bit of window dressing before the end of the second quarter?
This area could present the bulls with a bit of a challenge as this is the upper trend line of the downward channel that has formed since the FTSE started it's declines back in May.
A break out from this channel to the upside might have just about squeezed the bears out in the near term and we could see the next leg higher to test 6000.

The indices spread betting markets have decided that the woes of both the political and the economic variety can be safely ignored for the moment.
And investors, who have been absent for quite a while, are looking at the current valuations as a buying opportunity. The FTSE is back above 5800 for the first time in a couple of weeks and traders will be watching the 5825 level as this is where we failed last time to recover the lost ground.
Resistance is therefore pretty obviously initially at this point 5825/30 and then more solidly up at 5885/90. Support is at 5785/90 and then 5765/70 before more powerful resistance to any weakness at 5730.
The Dow has performed better than the European indices in recent months, or at least less weakly, and the last few sessions seem to have turned sentiment around.
We are now above 12200 and the prospects 'look' reasonable. This is in the face of actual economic data which is much less pleasing. Traders will be watching 12240 for a near term failure as more buyers may come in above this point.
Shorts are being squeezed and traders will also be worrying that this is actually the reason for the whole rally of the last few days.

Equity spread betting markets might have responded to the news relatively well, but yields of the peripheral government bonds carried on higher.
The key now is the Greek debates and votes due to take place today and tomorrow which will determine whether they get their next tranche of funding to stave off a default.
The FTSE is drifting higher mainly on the back of US strength yesterday and positive moves in Asia overnight. We’re at 5760 at the time of writing so key upside levels are being watched closely at 5780 and 5820 and then a real test around 5875. Support is seen at the same levels as yesterday so 5650 and 5600.
The final reading of UK GDP is released today with the figure expected to remain at 0.5% for Q1 and 1.8% year on year.
Analysts will be interested to see the consumer component, which has been incredibly weak, and whether the savers have been stretching under the mattress to spend as opposed to using any disposable income that they might have left, if any at all.
Then there’s consumer confidence from the US which might be the highlight of the day on the data front.

This morning things got off to rather a negative start, but already the FTSE has reversed early losses taking it back above 5700.
For all the dire news that’s been engulfing the markets over the past few weeks, the shares spread betting markets have actually held up relatively well considering.
For now key support around 5650 and 5600 has been holding up, while gains have been capped by resistance around 5800 and have kept the FTSE from regaining the upper hand.
Economic data is thin on the ground today and comes in the form of personal income and consumption from the US.
These are not considered to be huge market movers, but you can’t discount the fact that if the Dow does jump in one direction or another, this data will probably be to blame.

I’m sure most of the traders reading this report will just have emerged from a deep sleep, recovering from an exhausting trading session yesterday.
After the International Energy Agency declared they were going to tap their emergency supply for the third time in 37 years, investors saw a 6% drop in the black gold and a sell off in major indices.
Over in the US, weak unemployment data added fuel to the fire, with weekly jobless claims coming in higher than expected at 429k, more than the expected 414k.
To slightly lighten the mood, the European Union leaders promised more money to help Greece fight off the possibility of a default. Even though Athens has still got a mountain to climb, investors took this news well and helped the US offset losses from the earlier damage.
The FTSE 100 index closed 98 points south, or 1.7% lower, on Thursday at 5674, dragged down by weak miners and energy stocks. This came on ballooned fears of a slowdown in global growth after US Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke gave a bleak outlook on the economy and the IEA ignited fears by stepping in to keep oil flowing.
There’s no important data being released from the UK today, so all eyes will be on the numbers from across the pond, with the final reading for US first-quarter growth and May durable goods both due at 13:30 BST.

The members of the Fed acknowledged the sluggish pace of the US economic recovery, but did not point towards any further plans for stimulus.
Without offering any motivation for an equity buyout, Ben Bernanke did downgrade the growth prospects for 2011, nailing the target to the wall at 2.7%, down from the previous 2.9%.
So anyone hoping for positive statements from the Fed chairman left the meeting feeling disappointed, leading investors to get their own back by selling off and ceasing a four-day rally which had lifted stocks from three-month lows.
The above also prompted a slide in the Asian indices spread betting markets.
The Nikkei was left vulnerable to an end of the Fed’s quantitative easing as Japanese shares have benefited from views that excess liquidity pumped into the markets by the Fed would find its way to the undervalued shares.
Tight liquidity in China’s financial markets also helped to keep banking shares on the back foot with the benchmark Hang Seng edging down 0.79%.
The UK 100 index saw little movement yesterday, closing 2 points lower at 5722. Investors were seen to be taking a peripheral view or were maybe just being cautious ahead of the Federal Open Market Committee meeting. Either way, weakness in banks offset gains in defensive stocks, with positions being jostled ahead of the Fed rate decision.
On the domestic macroeconomic front, June’s UK CBI distributive trades report will be released at 11:00 BST, and from our friends across the Atlantic, U.S. weekly jobless claims will be released at 13:30 BST. This will come ahead of the Chicago Fed index and May new home sales both coming out at 15:00 BST. For information about today’s releases also see Economic Indicators.

The FTSE 100 had an exciting day yesterday, pushing 81 points higher to 5775 after eager traders were awaiting news of the Greek parliament vote of confidence.
Commodities and banks were back on the bounce as traders shunned safer utility stocks, in the wake of Goldman Sachs cutting price targets for the sector.
It was said that safer, cyclical stocks were in favour last week, however the theme seems to have changed for this week and traders are looking at the riskier end of the shares spread betting spectrum.

The FTSE 100 took a hit as banks and commodity stocks were the casualties and the uncertain situation in Greece encouraged investors out of riskier equity spread betting markets.
The main index was down 21 points to 5693 and the problem is, until we know exactly what the deal will be with Greece, we could expect to see the market bounce around over the short term.
In the US we have existing home sales data at 2pm and the FOMC meeting at 4pm, so we could see a bit of movement after the data release today.

All eyes appear to be on the Greek situation this morning, following the meeting between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy this weekend.
The correction on Friday in the shares spread betting markets also seems to be a mere hiccup in the continuing downtrend. European markets in particular are in danger of bearing the brunt of the new bailout package.
Boris Johnson appears to be leading the call for cutting Greece loose and reducing Euro members by one, for now. However, with Portugal, Ireland and possibly Belgium, Spain and Italy not too far behind, it will be interesting to see if the "too big to fail" principle applies to governments as well as banks.
