Spread Betting Indices and Equities

Trading Features / Strategies from Simon Denham of Capital Spreads.

A real roller coaster ride yesterday as morning business took the FTSE 100 all the way down to 5950 before US sentiment changed the atmosphere and up we shot. This was slightly odd as much of the actual news flow yesterday was not the best. The overall European sentiment index worsened considerably with German, Spanish and Belgian numbers reversing recent growth expectations and the ECB is now coming under increasing pressure to react to the economic situation rather than the inflationary one.

It would not do the Euro land a great deal of good to have inflation at zero if the effort to get to it caused a serious slow down. Most States would happily ‘endure’ 2 to 4pc inflation if it meant steady growth and strong employment potential.

The ability for the markets to remain at the higher end of the recent trading range is giving more comfort to investors and we are seeing a steady stream of small stake building across the UK centric spectrum. Finally the Capital Spreads Accounts are tiring of Mining and Oil stock and we have seen some lightening of positions and even a few brave shorts. The strength of the main indices across the globe would seem to fly in the face of ‘common sense’. However with many companies now giving, on a historical basis, wonderful returns and with interest rates probably on a medium / long term downward spiral the search for return is taking investors unerringly towards the shell shocked parts of the equity markets.

Spread Betting clients are finally buying heavily into the financial sector as the RBS right issue sinks into trading psyche. Four days of selling since the announcement has left the stock looking very attractive if you believe that the bank will get the sort of historical returns out of the cash injection that it has in the past. The problem is, of course, whether the continued worsening of credit worthiness of the mortgage book starts to filter into the corporate sector. The old fashion world of ‘Junk Bond’ has not lived up to its name in recent times with defaults currently at an all time low. That makes this particular financial crises almost unique in that the woes of the banks have gone hand in hand with (most of) the rest of the market continuing to surge.
