Spread Betting Account Tips

Whilst there are many positive aspects to spread trading, you must also remember the downsides.

Spread betting carries a high level of risk. You should only speculate with funds you can afford to lose. Before trading, please ensure that spread betting matches your investment requirements, familiarise yourself with the risks involved and, if necessary, seek independent advice.

Any other aspects that need to be considered?

In the various internet forums and chat rooms there are many trading tips. Some good, some less so. Here are a few of the more common ideas:
  • Try to trade the markets and sectors that you know. If you do not know anything about the foreign exchanges markets it's best to avoid them. If you are most familiar with the commodities markets then that is a good place to start your research.

  • Try to control your emotions. Emotions can often get in the way of your trading, especially after you have lost a trade. Using orders like Limit Orders and Stop Losses can help your decision making process. Also, having a plan and sticking to it will help. Remember that ‘chasing losses', ie trading after you have just lost a bet in order to recoup your money, will often result in two, or more, losing trades.

  • It is often worth trying a spread betting practice account. These are free accounts with virtual funds. If you are new to this form of trading then a little free practice should help you understand the ups and downs as well as the various types of trading orders.

Risk Warning: Spread betting and CFD trading carry a high level of risk to your capital and you may lose more than your initial investment. Spread betting and CFD trading may not be suitable for all investors. Only speculate with money that you can afford to lose. Please ensure you fully understand the risks involved and seek independent financial advice where necessary.
