How to Spread Bet on Indices - Buying FTSE 100 Rolling Daily

As with a wide range of markets, it is possible to spread bet on indices, like the FTSE 100, to rise or fall.

Looking at the Tradefair spread betting site, they are showing the FTSE 100 Rolling Daily market at 5884.0 - 5885.0. As a result, an investor could spread trade on the FTSE 100 market:
  • Increasing above 5885.0, or
  • Decreasing below 5884.0
Whilst making a spread bet on the FTSE 100 index you trade in £x per point. As a result, if you staked £3 per point and the FTSE 100 moves 5.0 points then that would alter your profit/loss by £15. £3 per point x 5.0 points = £15.

Rolling Daily Index Markets

It is important to note that this is a Rolling Daily Market and so in contrast with futures markets, there is no settlement date. As a result, if your trade is still open at the end of the trading day, it simply rolls over to the next session.

Should your position roll over, if you are speculating that the market will:
  • Rise - then you will pay a small overnight financing fee, or
  • Fall - then a small payment is often credited to your account
For more information on Rolling Daily Markets, and a fully worked example, please see Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

FTSE 100 Rolling Daily Indices Spread Betting Example

If you consider the above spread of 5884.0 - 5885.0 and make the assumptions that:
  • you have done your research, and
  • you think that the FTSE 100 index will go higher than 5885.0
then you may buy at 5885.0 and invest, for the sake of argument, £1 per point.

With such a spread bet you win £1 for every point that the FTSE 100 index rises above 5885.0. Of course, it also means that you will make a loss of £1 for every point that the FTSE 100 market decreases below 5885.0.

Looking at this from another angle, if you buy a spread bet then your profit/loss is worked out by taking the difference between the final price of the market and the price you bought the market at. You then multiply that difference in price by the stake.

As a result, if after a few trading sessions the stock market rose then you might consider closing your trade in order to guarantee your profit. So if the market increased then the spread, set by the spread trading firm, might move up to 5973.3 - 5974.3. You would close/settle your spread bet by selling at 5973.3. So, with the same £1 stake you would calculate your profit as:

Profits (or losses) = (Final Price - Opening Price) x stake
Profits (or losses) = (5973.3 - 5885.0) x £1 per point stake
Profits (or losses) = 88.3 x £1 per point stake
Profits (or losses) = £88.30 profit

Trading stock market indices, whether by spread trading or otherwise, doesn't always go to plan. In the above example, you had bet that the index would go up. However, it could fall.

If the FTSE 100 index fell then you might choose to close your position in order to restrict your losses.

If the market fell to 5808.5 - 5809.5 then this means you would settle your position by selling at 5808.5. If so, your loss would be calculated as:

Profits (or losses) = (Final Price - Opening Price) x stake
Profits (or losses) = (5808.5 - 5885.0) x £1 per point stake
Profits (or losses) = -76.5 x £1 per point stake
Profits (or losses) = -£76.50 loss

Note: FTSE 100 Rolling Daily spread betting price taken as of 07-Jun-11.

How to Spread Bet on Indices - Buying DAX Rolling Daily

Looking at the InterTrader trading site, they are valuing the DAX Rolling Daily market at 7126.0 - 7127.0. Therefore, an investor could spread trade on the DAX index:
  • Rising above 7127.0, or
  • Falling below 7126.0
When making a spread bet on the DAX index you trade in £x per point. So, if you chose to invest £4 per point and the DAX moves 6.0 points then that would be a difference to your profits (or losses) of £24. £4 per point x 6.0 points = £24.

Rolling Daily Indices Markets

An important aspect of this Rolling Daily Market is that there is no settlement date for this market. If your position is still open at the end of the day, it will stay open and roll over into the next day.

If a bet is rolled over and you are spread betting on the market to:
  • Increase - then you usually pay a small overnight financing fee, or
  • Decrease - then a small payment is normally credited to your account
For a more detailed breakdown of Rolling Daily Markets please read our article Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

DAX Rolling Daily Index Trading Example

So, if we think about the spread of 7126.0 - 7127.0 and assume:
  • you have done your analysis of the markets, and
  • it leads you to think that the DAX index will push above 7127.0
then you may decide that you want to go long of the market at 7127.0 and risk, for the sake of argument, £2 per point.

Therefore, you make a profit of £2 for every point that the DAX index rises higher than 7127.0. Having said that, you will lose £2 for every point that the DAX market moves lower than 7127.0.

Considering this from another angle, if you ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your profits (or losses) are worked out by taking the difference between the settlement price of the market and the initial price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that difference in price by your stake.

As a result, if after a few days the stock market moved higher then you could consider closing your trade to lock in your profit. Taking this a step further, if the market rose then the spread, set by the spread trading firm, might move up to 7184.0 - 7185.0. In order to close your position you would sell at 7184.0. As a result, with the same £2 stake your profit would be calculated as:

Your P&L = (Closing Price - Opening Price) x stake
Your P&L = (7184.0 - 7127.0) x £2 per point stake
Your P&L = 57.0 x £2 per point stake
Your P&L = £114.00 profit

Speculating on indices, by spread betting or otherwise, is not easy. In this case, you had bet that the index would increase. However, it could decrease.

If the DAX market had started to fall then you could choose to close your spread bet in order to limit your losses.

Should the market fall back to 7062.9 - 7063.9 then this means you would settle/close your trade by selling at 7062.9. If so, this would result in a loss of:

Your P&L = (Closing Price - Opening Price) x stake
Your P&L = (7062.9 - 7127.0) x £2 per point stake
Your P&L = -64.1 x £2 per point stake
Your P&L = -£128.20 loss

Note: DAX Rolling Daily spread correct as of 07-Jun-11.

How to Spread Bet on Indices - Buying Dow Jones Rolling Daily

If an investor was to look at the FinancialSpreads spread trading website, they are currently giving the Dow Jones Rolling Daily market at 12167 - 12169. As a result, an investor could spread bet on the Dow Jones market:
  • Going higher than 12169, or
  • Going lower than 12167
Whilst making a spread bet on the Dow Jones index you trade in £x per point. So, if you invested £2 per point and the Dow Jones moves 15 points then there would be a difference to your bottom line of £30. £2 per point x 15 points = £30.

Rolling Daily Index Markets

Be aware that this is a Rolling Daily Market which means that it does not have a set settlement date. Therefore, if you decide not to close your trade by the end of the day, it will stay open and roll over into the next trading session.

If a spread bet is rolled over and you are speculating on the market to:
  • Go higher - then you will pay a small overnight financing fee, or
  • Go lower - then a small payment is often credited to your account
For a more detailed breakdown of Rolling Daily Markets please read our article Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

Dow Jones Rolling Daily Indices Spread Trading Example

So, if you think about the spread of 12167 - 12169 and make the assumptions that:
  • you have completed your analysis of the markets, and
  • it leads you to think that the Dow Jones index will rise higher than 12169
then you might buy at 12169 for a stake of, for the sake of argument, £1 per point.

With such a bet you win £1 for every point that the Dow Jones index moves above 12169. Nevertheless, it also means that you will lose £1 for every point that the Dow Jones market moves lower than 12169.

Thinking of this in a slightly different way, if you were to buy a spread bet then your profit/loss is worked out by taking the difference between the final price of the market and the initial price you bought the market at. You then multiply that difference in price by the stake.

If after a few days the market rose then you might consider closing your trade so that you can secure your profit. Therefore, if the market moved up then the spread, determined by the spread betting firm, could change to 12309 - 12311. In order to close your position you would sell at 12309. As a result, with the same £1 stake this trade would result in a profit of:

Profit = (Settlement Level - Initial Level) x stake
Profit = (12309 - 12169) x £1 per point stake
Profit = 140 x £1 per point stake
Profit = £140 profit

Financial spread betting on indices can go against you. In the above example, you wanted the index to increase. However, it could fall.

If the Dow Jones index had started to fall then you could choose to close your spread bet in order to limit your losses.

So if the market pulled back to 12041 - 12043 then this means you would close your position by selling at 12041. As a result, your loss would be:

Loss = (Settlement Level - Initial Level) x stake
Loss = (12041 - 12169) x £1 per point stake
Loss = -128 x £1 per point stake
Loss = -£128 loss

Note: Dow Jones Rolling Daily spread betting market correct as of 07-Jun-11.

How to Spread Bet on Indices - Selling FTSE Rolling Daily

Let's say a spread betting firm is offering a Daily FTSE price of 6202 - 6206. Again you can 'buy' at 6206 or 'sell' at 6202.

  1. You think the FTSE is going to go down, so you 'Sell'.
  2. You decide to risk £10 per point
  3. The market rises in the afternoon. You decide to cut your losses by closing your bet at the latest current Daily FTSE price
  4. The new quote is 6210 - 6212
  5. To close a 'sell' bet you simply 'buy' at the top end of the spread for the same stake
  6. You buy £10/point at 6212
  7. Closing price = 6212
  8. Profit / Loss = (Opening price - Closing price) x stake
  9. Opening price = 6202
  10. Profit / Loss = (6202 - 6212) x £10 per point
  11. -10 point Loss x £10 per point
  12. Loss = -£100

FTSE market as of 20-May-08.

How to Spread Bet on Indices - Selling Wall Street Future

A new example, Wall Street has been gaining steadily but you feel the current level of 12215 is a medium term high. Therefore you could have a look at Wall Street Mar (March) and see the quote is 12331 - 12345.

Therefore you decide to SELL (go short) at 12331 for a stake of £5 per point.

You have Sold but the even if the price does increase you will still make a profit as long as it doesn't go above 12331 from the current level of 12215.

Let's say you're not quite right and the market continues to go up but only a fraction and in March it settles at 12290.

Your profit is calculated by calculating the difference between the closing level (12290) and the opening price (12331) and multiplying that by your stake.

Profit on day = (12331 - 12290) x £5 per point stake

= 41 points x £5 per point = £205 profit

However had Wall Street continued to increase at a greater rate and closed at 12360, you would have lost.

Loss = (12331 - 12360) x £5 per point stake

= -29 points x £5 per point = -£145 loss

Wall Street market as of 5-Feb-08.
