Spread Betting on Wall Street (aka the Dow Jones).
Spread Betting on Wall Street Example
The US Federal Reserve has said that it will supply whatever funding is needed to ensure the banks can continue to lend to each other. By the weekend the Fed put nearly £19bn into the markets. The S&P500 ended slightly up and Dow Jones only 0.2% down.
With the credit market in deep freeze is it time to go against the trend? Looking at the some of the free Wall Street Charts (see below) the market is experiencing a downward trend but also oscillating. Wall Street refers to the index of the top 30 US traded stocks.
As with many financial markets, investors can financial spread trade on the future value of Indices. That is to say that, spread traders can financial spreadbet on the Indices market going up or falling, for example spread trading on the Wall Street (Sept) market going up in price to more than 13,298 by 21 September.
So looking at an example, let's say the price is 13,292 - 13,298 and you have done your research and think that the Wall Street (Sept) value will go up to more than 13,298.
Therefore you buy at 13,298 for a stake of £5 per point.
So if, let's say that by the end date of 21 September the Wall Street (Sept) finishes at 13,340. If so, you will profit.
Your profit/loss is calculated by taking the difference between the level the trade closed at, ie 13,340 and the buy price you made the spread bet at, ie 13,298.
P&L = (13,340 - 13,298) x £5 per point stake.
= 42 x £5 per point stake.
= £210 profit.
Nevertheless if the market didn't move as expected and had the Wall Street (Sept) price gone against you and the market settled lower at 13,287, then you would have lost.
Loss = (13,287 - 13,298) x £5 per point stake.
= -11 x £5 per point stake.
= -£55 loss.
