How to Spread Trade on Indices - S&P 500 Futures
As with a wide range of markets, it is possible to speculate on stock market indices, such as the S&P 500, to either rise or fall.
If an investor was to look at the Paddypowertrader spread trading website, they are pricing the S&P 500 June Futures market at 1325.1 - 1325.9. As a result, you could spread trade on the S&P 500 index:
- Closing higher than 1325.9, or
- Closing lower than 1325.1
On the expiry date for this 'June' market, 16-Jun-11.
Whilst financial spread trading on the S&P 500 index you trade in £x per 0.1 points. As a result, if you chose to have a stake of £4 per 0.1 points and the S&P 500 moves 0.5 points then that would be a difference to your bottom line of £20. £4 per 0.1 points x 0.5 points = £20.
For short term trading on the S&P 500 also see S&P 500 Rolling Daily Spread Trading.
S&P 500 Futures Trading Example
If you consider the above spread of 1325.1 - 1325.9 and assume that:
- you have done your analysis of the markets, and
- it leads you to feel that the S&P 500 futures market will close above 1325.9 by 16-Jun-11
then you may decide that you want to buy at 1325.9 and invest £2 per 0.1 points.
Therefore, you make a profit of £2 for every 0.1 points that the S&P 500 index moves higher than 1325.9. Conversely, however, you will lose £2 for every 0.1 points that the S&P 500 market falls lower than 1325.9.
Thinking of this in a slightly different way, should you ‘Buy’ a spread trade then your profits (or losses) are found by taking the difference between the final price of the market and the initial price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that difference in price by your stake.
Subsequently, if, on the closing date, the S&P 500 market finished higher at 1332.5, then:
P&L = (Final Price - Initial Price) x stake
P&L = (1332.5 - 1325.9) x £2 per 0.1 points stake
P&L = 6.6 x £2 per 0.1 points stake
P&L = £132 profit
Spread trading on indices doesn't always go to plan. In the above example, you had speculated that the index would go up. However, the index can also decrease.
If the S&P 500 fell and settled lower at 1319.9, you would end up making a loss and losing money on this market.
P&L = (Final Price - Initial Price) x stake
P&L = (1319.9 - 1325.9) x £2 per 0.1 points stake
P&L = -6.0 x £2 per 0.1 points stake
P&L = -£120 loss
Note - S&P 500 June Futures spread trading price taken as of 17-Feb-11.
