How to Spread Bet on Irish Shares - Smurfit Kappa Rolling Daily
If you are going to speculate on European companies like Smurfit Kappa then one option is to spread trade on the Smurfit Kappa share price.
If you were to look at the Capital Spreads spread trading site, they are showing the Smurfit Kappa Rolling Daily market at €7.43 - €7.48. As a result, you could spread bet on the Smurfit Kappa shares:
- Rising higher than €7.48, or
- Falling lower than €7.43
When spread trading on Irish shares you trade in £x per cent. Therefore, if you decided to risk £6 per cent and the Smurfit Kappa share price moves €0.05 then there would be a difference to your bottom line of £30. £6 per cent x €0.05 = £30.

Rolling Daily Equities Markets
Note that this is a Rolling Daily Market and therefore it does not have a set closing date. Should your trade be left open at the end of the trading day, it will just roll over into the next trading session.

- Move up - then you will pay a small overnight financing fee, or
- Move down - then a small payment is often credited to your account

Smurfit Kappa Rolling Daily - Irish Shares Spread Trading Example
Now, if you consider the above spread of €7.43 - €7.48 and make the assumptions that:
- you have done your market analysis, and
- you think that the Smurfit Kappa shares are likely to rise higher than €7.48
then you could decide that you are going to buy at €7.48 and risk, let’s say, £3 per cent.
So, you win £3 for every cent that the Smurfit Kappa shares push above €7.48. However, you will lose £3 for every cent that the Smurfit Kappa market decreases below €7.48.
Put another way, if you buy a spread bet then your profit/loss is calculated by taking the difference between the settlement price of the market and the initial price you bought the market at. You then multiply that price difference by the stake.
If after a few hours the stock moved higher then you might want to close your spread bet so that you can secure your profit.
Therefore, if the market moved up then the spread, determined by the spread betting company, could be adjusted to €7.85 - €7.90. In order to close/settle your position you would sell at €7.85. As a result, with the same £3 stake you would make:
Profit = (Final Level - Opening Level) x stake
Profit = (€7.85 - €7.48) x £3 per cent stake
Profit = €0.37 x £3 per cent stake
Profit = 37c x £3 per cent stake
Profit = £111 profit
Speculating on shares, by spread trading or otherwise, is not always straightforward. In this case, you had bet that the share price would go up. However, it might decrease.
If the Smurfit Kappa shares had started to fall then you might choose to close your spread bet in order to limit your losses.
Should the spread pull back to €7.16 - €7.21 then you would settle your spread bet by selling at €7.16. Therefore, you would make a loss of:
Loss = (Final Level - Opening Level) x stake
Loss = (€7.16 - €7.48) x £3 per cent stake
Loss = -€0.32 x £3 per cent stake
Loss = -32c x £3 per cent stake
Loss = -£96 loss
