UK Market Comment, 17 April 2012
Closing comments from Yusuf Heusen, Sales Trader, IG Index:
A set of solid earnings reports has allowed markets to shrug off the Eurozone crisis, at least for now, with the FTSE 100 up 80 points as the session heads to a close.
Big-name American firms like Goldman Sachs, Coca-Cola and Johnson & Johnson have all helped investors to focus on the positive, while stronger German economic sentiment is providing an excuse to forget the worsening situation in Spain.
Having pushed back to the levels seen at the beginning of April, the question is now whether markets can regain lost ground, or whether the Eurozone crisis is strong enough to drag us back downward.
Certainly, with the IMF sounding more positive on the outlook for the global economy, the bulls seem to have the upper hand once again, even if investors aren’t exactly rushing from their safe havens just yet.
Even Apple has returned to form, gaining 3% after suffering five days of losses.
Tech-firms IBM and Intel will report on earnings after the market close, which should provide plenty of interest for fans of the sector.
However, there are still the hurdles of Spanish and French bond auctions to get over later in the week, so we can’t say yet that we are entirely out of the woods.

UK Market Comment, 12 April 2012
Closing comments from Chris Beauchamp, Market Analyst, IG Index:
Heading into the close, the FTSE 100 has returned to rude health, up 60 points for the day.
Eurozone yields might be rising, US jobless claims might be increasing again, and the Germans might be plotting another constitutional challenge to the eurozone’s rescue funds, but this has not stopped the market from staging another strong rally.
Benchmark bond yields are retreating again, with Spain and Italy drawing away from the dangerous 6% level, even after a bond auction that saw Italian five-year yields rise.
The message from this week seems to be that the battle between the bulls and bears is now more delicately-poised than it has been for some time.
Both sides can point to evidence to support their arguments, but for the moment the bulls seem to be fractionally more powerful, having pulled spread betting markets back from the post-Easter sell-off.
With a slew of Chinese data out tomorrow, including GDP, retail sales and industrial production, and the first April reading of the Michigan confidence index, there is plenty for markets to chew over as the week winds down.
Rumours of a stronger Chinese GDP number certainly put a rocket under the FTSE 100 today, but this of course runs the risk of disappointment tomorrow.
