Second Class Financial Ticket

Trading Features / Strategies from Simon Denham of Capital Spreads.
In the search for a good sound byte I have decided that every single statement coming from my company will pre prefaced with the words ‘green’ or bio-diverse’.
As virtually any outrageous, incorrect or misinformed statement can be excused by claiming ecological sympathies I feel confident that the new corporate logo “Pay More Because We Care” will be a real winner.
Middle Class consumers conditioned for years to feel guilty for just about everything under the sun will be made to feel extra special that the addition to their shopping basket will be used for a good cause; namely increasing my shareholder returns. Poorer people? Well who cares about them? That warm cuddly feeling we all get as ‘Our Gordon’, ‘Captain Darling’ or ‘4X4 Ken’ do exactly the same thing when slapping yet another ‘Green’ tax on essential spending items will now be spread across into the corporate sector.

This piece of 'satire' would not matter so much if it was not symptomatic of the culture currently prevailing in the UK. As Beijing builds the biggest airport on the planet and every city in China and India looks to be constructing their own mega air portals Britain sits back and twiddles its thumbs over the expansion (or construction) of new travel capacity. From new roads to new railways we allow the minority interest groups to set the agenda and this, in a nutshell, means stagnation.
Bypasses (which by the way REDUCE carbon emissions) are blocked and aside from the absurdly expensive Euro train no new railways have been built for over 100 years. Who do we have in charge of transport in the capital city? A man who seems to despise car users. With a transport policy that could effectively be summed up as ‘No Transport Policy’ the UK runs the risk of being left well and truly behind in the global economy stakes. It is many years since transport policy was run on the basis of ‘provide something better and people will change’. In Britain we seem to work on the basis of ‘charge people more’ and hope that they will change. And it’s not just Labour’s fault, the Tories are guilty as well.
With a snarling up of basic transport lines business will look elsewhere to invest. We might pride ourselves on the power of the financial sector in the city of London but finance is probably the most portable business on the planet. The logistics of moving money around could not be simpler. HSBC yesterday showed that some 50% of revenue now comes from abroad and I am giving no prizes for guessing which sector is the higher growth one. At some point the company may well decide that the expense of running the operation from London is just not worth it and where HSBC lead others will follow.
