How to Spread Bet on Sanofi-Aventis

How to Spread Bet on Sanofi-Aventis?

If you are looking to speculate on companies such as Sanofi-Aventis then one solution could be spread betting on the Sanofi-Aventis share price.

Looking at a financial spread betting platform like Financial Spreads, we can see that they are currently pricing the Sanofi-Aventis Rolling Daily market at €71.83 - €72.01. Therefore, you can spread bet on the Sanofi-Aventis share price:

Sanofi-Aventis Trading Example Going higher than €72.01, or
Sanofi-Aventis Spread Betting Example Going lower than €71.83

Whilst financial spread trading on French equities you trade in £x per cent. Therefore, if you chose to have a stake of £5 per cent and the Sanofi-Aventis share price moves €0.32 then there would be a difference to your profits (or losses) of £160. £5 per cent x €0.32 = £160.

Note that you can also invest in this market in Dollars or Euros, e.g. €x per cent.

Rolling Daily Equities Markets

One important thing to note is that this is a 'Rolling Daily Market' and therefore there is no preset settlement date for this market. If a trade is still open when the markets close at the end of the day, it will stay open and roll over into the next trading session.

If you do let your trade roll over into the next day and are spread betting on the market to:

Sanofi-Aventis Spread Betting Example Move up - then you will normally be charged a small financing fee, or
Sanofi-Aventis Spread Betting Example Move down - then you will usually receive a small credit to your account

For a more detailed guide to Rolling Daily Markets, including a fully worked example, please read our feature Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

Sanofi-Aventis Rolling Daily - French Equities Spread Betting Example

If you continue with the spread of €71.83 - €72.01 and make the assumptions that:
  • You have completed your analysis of the sector, and
  • Your research leads you to feel the Sanofi-Aventis shares are likely to push higher than €72.01
Then you may decide that you are going to go long of the market at €72.01 for a stake of £3 per cent.

So, you gain £3 for every cent that the Sanofi-Aventis shares move above €72.01. Of course, such a bet also means that you will lose £3 for every cent that the Sanofi-Aventis market falls lower than €72.01.

Looked at another way, if you were to ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your profits (or losses) are worked out by taking the difference between the final price of the market and the price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that price difference by your stake.

Therefore, if after a few hours the stock started to move upwards then you could choose to close your trade so that you can guarantee your profit. Therefore, if the market moved up then the spread, determined by the spread betting firm, could change to €72.48 - €72.66. In order to close your spread bet you would sell at €72.48. Therefore, with the same £3 stake your profit would come to:

P&L = (Closing Value - Initial Value) x stake
P&L = (€72.48 - €72.01) x £3 per cent stake
P&L = €0.47 x £3 per cent stake
P&L = 47c x £3 per cent stake
P&L = £141 profit

Trading shares, by spread betting or otherwise, is not straightforward. With this example, you had bet that the share price would go up. Nevertheless, it can also go down.

If the Sanofi-Aventis shares weakened, against your expectations, then you might choose to close your spread bet in order to limit your losses.

Should the spread drop to €71.60 - €71.78 you would sell back your position at €71.60. As a result, your loss would be:

P&L = (Closing Value - Initial Value) x stake
P&L = (€71.60 - €72.01) x £3 per cent stake
P&L = -€0.41 x £3 per cent stake
P&L = -41c x £3 per cent stake
P&L = -£123 loss
