How to Spread Bet on German Shares - Salzgitter Rolling Daily
Should you decide to invest in firms like Salzgitter then one option is to spread trade on the Salzgitter share price.
If you were to look at the Inter Trader spread betting website, they are showing the Salzgitter Rolling Daily market at €51.50 - €51.64. Therefore, an investor can spread bet on the Salzgitter shares:
- Increasing higher than €51.64, or
- Decreasing lower than €51.50
Whilst financial spread trading on German shares you trade in £x per cent. Therefore, should you decide to invest £4 per cent and the Salzgitter share price changes by €0.05 then that would change your bottom line by £20. £4 per cent x €0.05 = £20.
Note that you can also spread bet on this market in Euros or Dollars, e.g. $x per cent.
Rolling Daily Shares Markets
One important thing to note is that this is a Rolling Daily Market and so it does not have a settlement date. You do not have to close your trade, should it still be open at the end of the trading day, it simply keeps rolling over into the next trading session.
If you do let your bet roll over into the next day and are spread betting on the market to:
- Increase - then you are charged a small overnight financing fee, or
- Decrease - then a small payment is usually credited to your account

Salzgitter Rolling Daily - German Equities Spread Betting Example
So, if we think about the above spread of €51.50 - €51.64 and assume that:
- you have done your analysis of the markets, and
- it leads you to think that the Salzgitter share price will go higher than €51.64
then you could decide that you want to buy at €51.64 and risk, for example, £2 per cent.
So, you win £2 for every cent that the Salzgitter shares rise above €51.64. However, you will lose £2 for every cent that the Salzgitter market goes below €51.64.
Put another way, if you buy a spread bet then your P&L is calculated by taking the difference between the closing price of the market and the initial price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that difference in price by the stake.
Therefore, if after a few hours the stock started to rise you might decide to close your spread bet in order to secure your profit.
So if the market increased then the spread, set by the spread trading company, might change to €52.36 - €52.50. In order to close your position you would sell at €52.36. Therefore, with the same £2 stake you would calculate your profit as:
Profit / loss = (Final Value - Opening Value) x stake
Profit / loss = (€52.36 - €51.64) x £2 per cent stake
Profit / loss = €0.72 x £2 per cent stake
Profit / loss = 72c x £2 per cent stake
Profit / loss = £144 profit
Trading equities, whether by spread trading or otherwise, doesn't always work out as you would have liked. In this example, you had bet that the share price would rise. Nevertheless, it might go down.
If the Salzgitter shares had fallen then you could close your trade in order to limit your losses.
If the spread dropped to €50.87 - €51.01 you would settle/close your trade by selling at €50.87. That would mean you would lose:
Profit / loss = (Final Value - Opening Value) x stake
Profit / loss = (€50.87 - €51.64) x £2 per cent stake
Profit / loss = -€0.77 x £2 per cent stake
Profit / loss = -77c x £2 per cent stake
Profit / loss = -£154 loss
