How to Spread Bet on US Shares - Procter & Gamble Rolling Daily
If an investor decides to speculate on companies such as Procter & Gamble then one option could be to place a spread bet on the Procter & Gamble share price.
If an investor was to look at the FinancialSpreads spread betting website, they are currently showing the Procter & Gamble Rolling Daily market at $60.33 - $60.42. Therefore, an investor can spread trade on the Procter & Gamble share price:
- Moving higher than $60.42, or
- Moving lower than $60.33
When spread betting on US shares you trade in £x per cent. As a result, if you choose to have a stake of £2 per cent and the Procter & Gamble share price changes by $0.05 then that would make a difference to your bottom line of £10. £2 per cent x $0.05 = £10.
Note that you are also able to spread bet on this market in Euros or Dollars, e.g. €x per cent.
Rolling Daily Equities Markets
Be aware that this is a Rolling Daily Market which means that there is no closing date for this market. As a result, if your trade is still open at the end of the trading day, it simply rolls over to the next trading day.
If your position does roll over and you are speculating on the market to:
- Move up - then you normally pay a small overnight financing fee, or
- Move down - then you will normally receive a small credit to your account

Procter & Gamble Rolling Daily - US Shares Spread Trading Example
Now, if we think about the spread of $60.33 - $60.42 and assume that:
- you have done your analysis of the markets, and
- it leads you to feel that the Procter & Gamble share price will move above $60.42
then you might decide that you want to go long of the market at $60.42 for a stake of, for the sake of argument, £1 per cent.
So, you gain £1 for every cent that the Procter & Gamble shares push higher than $60.42. However, such a bet also means that you will lose £1 for every cent that the Procter & Gamble market moves lower than $60.42.
Put another way, if you ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your profits (or losses) are calculated by taking the difference between the final price of the market and the price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that difference in price by the stake.
As a result, if after a few trading sessions the shares started to increase then you might think about closing your trade in order to guarantee your profit.
As an example, should the market rise, the spread, determined by the spread betting company, could be adjusted to $61.78 - $61.87. To settle/close your trade you would sell at $61.78. So, with the same £1 stake your profit would be:
Profit / loss = (Settlement Price - Initial Price) x stake
Profit / loss = ($61.78 - $60.42) x £1 per cent stake
Profit / loss = $1.36 x £1 per cent stake
Profit / loss = 136¢ x £1 per cent stake
Profit / loss = £136 profit
Speculating on shares, by spread trading or otherwise, can work against you. In this case, you had bet that the share price would go up. Nevertheless, the share price can also fall.
If the Procter & Gamble share price fell then you could choose to close your position to limit your losses.
So if the spread dropped to $58.91 - $59.00 you would sell back your position at $58.91. If so, this would result in a loss of:
Profit / loss = (Settlement Price - Initial Price) x stake
Profit / loss = ($58.91 - $60.42) x £1 per cent stake
Profit / loss = -$1.51 x £1 per cent stake
Profit / loss = -151¢ x £1 per cent stake
Profit / loss = -£151 loss
