UK Market Comment, 10 August 2012
Closing comments from David Jones, Chief Market Strategist, IG Index:
Heading into the close it's been another quiet day for the FTSE, which is little changed.
Not even the debut of the shares of probably London's most followed football club, Manchester United, could ignite much excitement in markets after the US-listed company traded around its $14 IPO price.
The combination of summer holidays, the Olympics and the lack of a traditional summer financial crisis means that markets are range-bound; and very tight ranges at that.
However, the positive mood is still in evidence for shares. Whenever we do see the odd dip, slight though it may be to those experienced in recent months, it tends not to last too long before the market bounces back.
We could see a little more volatility return next week but it does feel like August is a welcome break from some of the gyrations so far this year. The excitement may well stay on hold until September, when talks regarding the Eurozone crisis get underway once more.

UK Market Comment, 09 August 2012
Closing comments from David Jones, Chief Market Strategist, IG Index:
Heading into the close, the FTSE is still just 5 points higher, as the week's rally casts around for a really positive catalyst.
With traders around the City glued to their screens, watching Team GB steadily accumulate more medals, the atmosphere in the markets is almost deathly quiet.
Chinese data this morning provided perhaps the most excitement that we've seen all week, but even this has failed to make much of a lasting impact.
The strong reading from last week's jobs report still lingers, but we look in vain for something that will provoke a significant move.
A rise in the US dollar and something of a sell-off for the euro shows that there are still pockets of unease, but most investors seem happy to let indices tick gradually higher.
So long as Eurozone politicians remain on their holidays, we might be able to extend this quiet period into next week; markets having been blissfully free of any unfortunate pronouncements of late.
Tomorrow sees more Chinese data, plus German CPI and a monthly budget statement from the US, but it seems that the week will end very much as it began, in a fairly dormant frame.
