According to the FTSE website "Northern Rock [was] removed from FTSE indices at zero value*. This will effectively mean that the last traded price of 90p is written down to zero".

If and when any compensatory valuation is declared to Northern Rock ordinary shareholders, FTSE will reassess the above indices in order to reflect the value shareholders receive at that time."

How to Spread Trade on Northern Rock Shares?
As with many markets, you can spread bet on equities, like Northern Rock shares, increasing or decreasing.
At the time of writing the Northern Rock (March) market is 109.7p - 110.1p with FinancialSpreads.com. This market expires on 18-Mar-08.
Therefore you can spread bet on Northern Rock shares settling:
- Above 110.1p, or
- Below 109.7p
By the March expiry date of 18-Mar-08.
With Northern Rock shares, like most UK equities, you trade in £X per penny, where a penny is 1p of share price movement. Eg if your stake was £15 per penny and Northern Rock shares move 4p then that would be a £60 difference to your profit / loss.
As you can see from the Graphs below and as you’ve no doubt read in the press, Northern Rock shares have been on their very own roller coaster ride.
- On September 17 the Northern Rock (December) market was priced at 299.8p -301.9p
- On September 20 the Northern Rock (December) market was priced at 169.5p -170.4p
- On September 25 Northern Rock (December) dipped further to 153.8p - 154.3p
- By November 21 the Northern Rock (March) spread was 87.1p - 87.9p
- By the close on November 26 the spread had recovered a little 109.7p - 110.1p
With such volatile shares you could have spread bet that the shares would go down and then bet that shares would go back up. If done at the right time you could have made a handsome profit on both bets. Of course, if your timing was off you could have lost quite a bit of money too.
'Buying' Northern Rock Shares Example
Taking the current Northern Rock spread of 109.7p - 110.1p, let’s say you think that Northern Rock will finish higher than 110.1p by 18-Mar-08.
Therefore you buy at 110.1p for a stake of, let’s say, £10 per penny.
So if, by the closing date, the shares settle at 136.6p, then:
Your profit / loss is worked out by taking the difference between the settlement prices of, 136.6p and the value you bought the spread bet at, 110.1p and then multiplying that by the stake per penny
Profits = (136.6p - 110.1p) x £10 per penny stake.
= 26.5p x £10 per penny stake.
= £265 profit.
But if the market didn't move as forecast and had Northern Rock shares fallen and closed down at 91.3p, you would have made a loss on this spread bet.
Loss = (91.3p - 110.1p) x £10 per penny stake.
= -18.8p x £10 per penny stake.
= -£188 loss.
'Selling' Northern Rock Shares Example
How to spread bet on Northern Rock's shares decreasing.
Looking at the above spreads, if it was September 25 you would have missed the largest drop in the share price but you could still bet on the shares to go further down.
Taking the above Northern Rock (December) market spread of 153.8 - 154.3p let's say you thought the share price would continue to drop and finish below 153.8p by expiry date of 18-Dec-07.
Therefore you sell at 153.8p for a stake of, let's say, £10 per penny.
And let's say that by the expiry date Northern Rock shares settled at 143.8p.
If so your profit/loss is found by taking the difference between the sell price you made the spread bet at, ie 153.8p and the closing value of 143.8p and then multiplying that by the stake.
Profit / loss = (153.8p - 143.8p) x £10 per penny stake
= 10p x £10 per penny stake
= £100 profit
However if the market did not move as forecast and had the Northern Rock shares finished higher at 163.3p then you would have lost.
Loss = (153.8p - 163.3p) x £10 per penny stake
= -9.5p x £10 per penny stake
= -£95 loss

You can often alter the charts to see market data by the minute, by the hour, by the week etc. There are also other settings that you can easily add such as Bollinger Bands and Moving Averages.
