How to Spread Bet on US Shares - Nicor Rolling Daily

If you want to speculate on firms like Nicor then one possibility could be to spread bet on the Nicor share price.

If you were to look at the Tradefair spread betting site, they are currently valuing the Nicor Rolling Daily market at $55.58 - $55.68. This means you could spread trade on the Nicor shares:
  • Increasing higher than $55.68, or
  • Decreasing lower than $55.58
Whilst financial spread trading on US shares you trade in £x per cent. So, should you decide to risk £2 per cent and the Nicor share price moves $0.05 then that would alter your profits (or losses) by £10. £2 per cent x $0.05 = £10.

Note that you are also able to invest in this market in Dollars or Euros, e.g. $x per cent.

Rolling Daily Shares Markets

It is important to note that this is a Rolling Daily Market and so it does not have a closing date. If your trade is still open at the end of the trading day, it simply keeps rolling over into the next day.

If your bet is rolled over and you are speculating that the market will:
  • Move up - then you are normally charged a small financing fee, or
  • Move down - then a small payment is usually credited to your account
If you would like a fully worked example then see Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

Nicor Rolling Daily - US Equities Trading Example

If we consider the above spread of $55.58 - $55.68 and make the assumptions that:
  • you have analysed the equities market, and
  • it leads you to feel that the Nicor shares look like they will move above $55.68
then you might choose to go long of the market at $55.68 and invest, let’s say, £1 per cent.

With such a spread bet you win £1 for every cent that the Nicor shares push higher than $55.68. However, such a bet also means that you will make a loss of £1 for every cent that the Nicor market decreases below $55.68.

Thinking of this in a slightly different way, should you ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your profits (or losses) are calculated by taking the difference between the settlement price of the market and the price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that price difference by your stake.

With this in mind, if after a few hours the stock started to move upwards then you could choose to close your spread bet to secure your profit. So if the market increased then the spread might move to $56.79 - $56.89. In order to close your spread bet you would sell at $56.79. As a result, with the same £1 stake your profit would be calculated as:

Your profits (or losses) = (Closing Level - Opening Level) x stake
Your profits (or losses) = ($56.79 - $55.68) x £1 per cent stake
Your profits (or losses) = $1.11 x £1 per cent stake
Your profits (or losses) = 111¢ x £1 per cent stake
Your profits (or losses) = £111 profit

Trading equities, whether by spread betting or otherwise, can go against you. In the above example, you had bet that the share price would increase. Naturally, it could go down.

If the Nicor shares fell then you might choose to close your position to stop any further losses.

If the spread dropped to $54.43 - $54.53 you would close your position by selling at $54.43. As a result, your loss would be:

Your profits (or losses) = (Closing Level - Opening Level) x stake
Your profits (or losses) = ($54.43 - $55.68) x £1 per cent stake
Your profits (or losses) = -$1.25 x £1 per cent stake
Your profits (or losses) = -125¢ x £1 per cent stake
Your profits (or losses) = -£125 loss

Note - Nicor Rolling Daily spread betting market correct as of 26-Jul-11.

Where can I Find Candlestick Charts for Nicor?

You can usually alter the charts to see market data by the tick, by the minute, by the hour, by the week etc. There are also other options that allow you to easily add analysis such as Bollinger Bands and Moving Averages.

As you can see the charts show how US share prices, as with most financial spread betting markets, are not perfect and how you can expect the prices to "gap".
